“Ebola ‘easier to avoid than malaria’: USAID”

I suppose after we made a heroine after Rachel Carson. I bang my head every time I realize my city named a bridge after her.

This person killed more people than Stalin, Hitler and Pol Pot combined:

I was reading the comments on this one. There was a whole lot of trusting that their officials will tell them the truth, and that it can be contained there. A whole lot of “well Ireland is different than Africa. It couldn’t happen here like there” attitudes. And assurances that you practically need to be elbow deep in body fluids. Many comments along the line of “You are just not going to get it that easily, even if it does get here (Ireland).” “If it gets here, we will be prepared and can handle it. We’re not Africa.”

I just had to shake my head. I hope they are right.

Interesting. Good question. The "occupation" media played up the limited doses and yet there is more. I wonder how useful ZMapp is and at what time during the course of infection the effectiveness is.

Good find. Funny. With all things considered, what happens to “paper money” in a pandemic. The five day infectious type of pandemic. Just gaming. My end game is silver. This still seems to me secondary to a loss of control.

The model is described in one of the tabs:

The Relative Import Risk (ReIP) at every node is computed with a stochastic, dynamical model that simulates travel movement patterns on the worldwide airtransportation network.

The foundation of the model is data on passenger flux between 4069 airports that are connected by approx. 25000 links. From this data we compute the probabilities that an individual at an airport travels to another connected airport. Arriving at an airport we estimated the probability that a passenger continues a journey or stays at the location. This dynamic model is combined with a recent model that accounts for the most probable paths that connect an arbitrary pair of nodes in the network. A manuscript with a detailed account of the model an various applications is in preparation.

Translation:

The model attempts to assign a probability that, given a passenger on a plane has Ebola (or another disease) and departs the airport chosen, that they will end up at other specific airports.

Some, major hubs or closer airports that passengers getting on in Lagos, for instance, are more likely to travel to have higher probabilities, where other, more remote or less frequently connected to airports have lower probabilities.

If you notice, hub airports (Atlanta, LAX, La Guardia, O'Hare, Heathrow, and others will have higher probabilities than places like Helena, Montana where traffic is relatively small. Closer airports which account for larger numbers of traveler destinations from the departure airport will have higher probabilities, because that is statistically the more likely destination of people on a flight from the chosen departure airport.

For instance, for an infected passenger leaving Freetown, the probability of them ending up in Lagos (the import probability) is over 15%, where although there are direct flights to BWI (Baltimore Washington International), the probability is only 1.9% because more passengers departing Freetown will be traveling to Lagos--even though there are direct links by air to both destinations.

I do not fully understand the ranks assigned, except that the passenger/day rank represents the number of people going through the given airport per day.

Outbranches would be destinations from the arrival airport by air, distance is literally distance in KM, and arrival time rank is the relative closeness to the departure airport in terms of which would arrive first. From Freetown: Banjul, Accra, Conakry, and Lagos, in that order, are the closest by air, for instance. That may provide a measure of the likelihood of someone who is asymptomatic developing symptoms on the flight or shortly afterwards: The longer the time, the higher that ranking, the more time for the disease to progress en route. Very low rank numbers (1, 2, 3) might be close enough for an asymptomatic infected person to slip through entirely.

I hope that helps.

I am waiting on the manuscript to better understand what the authors of the model had in mind myself.

Generally, though, If your local airport is farther down the chain, it is less likely that an infected person will end up there.

The normalcy bias is strong there, not much different from anywhere else that considers itself above the third world.

To me, complacency is the most dangerous enemy.

Panic is next, but one can lead rapidly to the other.

How long, in the cordoned off slums, before people eat the dogs?

Even Westerners would if hungry enough.

(After the siege was lifted in Leningrad, there were no pets. They had all been eaten, along with whatever wildlife there was, including rats.)

Since both dogs and pigs can be infected, butchering them would be high-risk, and anything that wasn't thoroughly cooked could be deadly. All the fluids and 'byproducts' would harbor the virus as well...
