According to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, running 5 minutes per day can reduce an individuals risk of premature death by about 3 years. Researchers found that people who ran less than an hour per week also saw an increase in lifespan, not just a decrease in risk of premature death. The study took place over the course of 15 years, testing participants ranging in age from 18-100.

I wonder if the 100 year olds could even roll over in bed. Most of them can. My hundred year old grandma was still walking a mile a day. Her medicine was an occasional aspirin.
When you reach a certain age only those who are in decent health reach it so those people are usually still mobile.

Wifey sees a cardiologist due to Peripheral Artery Disease (Plaque buildup in the arteries of one calf)...he prescribes 40 minutes of steady walking per day; not in increments - but one session.
She tops that off with 10 minutes on a manual treadmill to ice the cake; he's quite pleased with her improved circulation.

My great aunt, when she died in about 1996, was the oldest person in the US. She was almost 116 and close to being the oldest person in the world. She was a seamstress and fairly sedentary.
Our orthopedic doctor and my husbands long time friend, was a serious runner. he had both hips replaced and still kept running and exercising and died suddenly just before he turned 65.
When it is your time you will go.

After menopause, 5 minutes don’t mean squat no matter what you do!

I had to give up running for the same reason. I walk and ride a bike now.

Does this mean that Jim Fixx would have died at 20 instead of 52 if he was not a runner?
Interesting point since his family did have a history of heart trouble. His dad had two heart attacks, the second one killing him at 43 y/o.
In fact, Fixx had symptoms shortly before he died (the autopsy showed he recently had several small heart attacks) but he continued to ignore them.

The health Nazis don't want to hear it, but regardless of what they eat or what kind of exercise they do, they too will die one day.
How ignorant. Exercising reasonably is not about avoiding death, it's about quality of life.
I'm 67 y/o and have been running for 33 years. I'm down to 20 miles a week but I still get out there not only for the physical advantages, but mental as well.
I take no drugs, eat whatever I want, see a doctor once a year when she tells me reviewing my test results makes her think I'm 37, not 67.
I'm also a former smoker, but I am neither a smoking nazi nor or a health nazi. In fact, it sounds like you might better fit the description.

I was simply responding to the tone of the article.
Sorry if your exercise has atrophied your ability to detect that.
Of course, you are morally superior because you run. I am but a lowly schlub that won't.

But takes years off of my knees. Ill stick with my kettlebells thank you.Kettlebells are fantastic, but running shouldn't destroy your knees. Look into Brian Mackenzie and his methodologies/techniques. Very interesting stuff.
To: oh8eleven
LOL! Yep. You got it. Your moral superiority shines right through.
Thank you for making a point to highlight your moral superiority.
It's been a lesson to me.

You have a point. Genetics plays an important role in longevity. Still, there are some things that we can all do to prolong our lives.
