Posted on 06/27/2014 12:49:59 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Well, it wouldn’t have to be a 100% match. Close would work for my untrained palate.LOL

Gonna have to do some searching. I hear the company is having some sort of trouble, and it may not even be available. You heard anything about it?

Sorry about computer problems. Just went through that myself. Pansies still hanging in there despite the heat. Stems break when trying to pick a flower. So planted petunias in their place. Lilys are blooming and oh so fragrant!

I don’t know, but I would guess if they have bolted it’s time, if not past due time to harvest.

Did I miss something? You gave your cucuzza away? The ones you were checking on at one in the morning 8’ up on a ladder with a flashlight? :-)

Yeah, I guess I was prosletyzing for Cucuzzi..Also, he has given me bookhoos (sp) of sweet potatoes in the past.

I'm making homemade ice cram right now...My neighbor asked me when I borrowed her ice cream maker if I was making a tomato sorbet, or if I had found a tromboncino or cucuzza ice cream recipe.

After your daikon flowers fade, seed pods will form. They will be green at first, but then turn tan as they dry. You can harvest the pods as they fully dry, but I find it easier to harvest the whole stalk, pods and all, once the whole thing is dry. Radishes do cross, so if you have any other varieties growing nearby (1/2 mile) the seed may not be true to type. Hope this helps!

"As a point of clarity, what do you mean by along the trench.

Is that on top of the area where you put the wood, or is it around the perimeter of the area?

Thanks for the tip. I have gobs of unused wood from the trees we cut down to make room for more gardens.
"

Can you watch a YouTube video on your computer? Let me know.

If there are no water regulations stopping you from doing so, the following would probably be much easier to build and work better for you in MO and for other folks in the Midwest. You should see results within about a couple of years.

Here's the reason for my previous instructions being different. At least some of these states here in the West have water regulations that prevent terraces, dams and the like.

“So would you share you secrets for the spinach.”

Spousal unit did the planting, then left to hike the Camino de Santiago ... all 500 miles. I’ve just been tending things. I’ll ask her though and get back to you.

We use 5’ X 12’ raised beds filled with Glacier Gold compost. Wife mixed in some Llama poop several years ago, from a neighbor’s llamas. I don’t recommend it, breaks down very slowly, but it probably hasn’t hurt. Put some Moo Poo in year before last.

I did plant the beets, pumpkin, tomatoes, beans and peas because it was too cold for them before she left.

*****************************************

My uncle had an old ice cream maker (the kind you put ice/rock salt in & hand cranked) and my aunt cooked up the custard on the stove, then they put in fresh peaches. It was ice cream heaven - never have had anything so good in the years since. It was always a treat to get to their house & hear it was ‘ice cream’ for dessert.

Hello to you both from the wilds of South Central Texas. Have we ever had rain, it’s great and so beautiful and green. Also unfortunately humid, but we’ll take what we can get . . . Smile!

Our garden is really taking off. Warm days and scattered rain here near Philly the past couple of weeks. We re-did our raised beds so we got a bit of a late start and kept it small this season. Radishes and lettuce ready, many green tomatoes (5 kinds) and cucumbers starting, herbs look great. Raspberries (technically these are the neighbors, but they've happily encroached) are covered with beginning fruit. Planted 5 zucchini seeds, 4 took and the plants are HUGE! Watermelon vine is going strong. The only things not looking good are the peppers, and they usually do great with no attention at all, so I'm not sure what is going on there.

We had our first salad from the garden tonight -

Great pic. Looks yummy. Now I feel guilty that I had ice cream for dinner.
