The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

I just ordered a new dryer from Sears. I took the Sears model number and searched for it’s reviews online and read a great number of them that I knew were not biased by Sears. Some of their dryers were well liked others not too good. I chose a simple low feature model that didn’t have any quirky gimmicks or “features” that had great reviews and I got a great price, and of course, free shipping to my house. The free shipping to the house was worth something because the Sears store that had one was 20+ miles away and my trailer would have been required in an area with road construction and heavy traffic. The problem is it doesn’t get here till Saturday, but that really isn’t a problem for us.
I am going to shop their Labor Day sale to get a washer to replace the 15yo one that we are using. Finally, then we will have a new washer/dryer that I’ve been casually looking at for several years.
Lol, after breaking my back, taking everything out of the old one, and putting it back int, and seeing it fly down to 10 degrees in less than an hour..I will keep it, and the money I would've spent on a new one. The reason it needed defrosting was because I had gotten something out of it, a pkg of meat fell, and the door was left ajar overnight.
I decided that rather than buy the new one with the alarm if you leave the door ajar, to just organize it better, and use what's in there instead of putting more stuff in it every time meat is on sale, or I get on some kind of kick.. I must have a lifetime supply of pot stickers in there from when I was on a Korean Food Kick.
We finally got a new refrigerator(from Sears) that has the door ajar chime on it. It has saved the day for us a few times. We love it, have named it Big Bertha. We shopped for a couple of years and moved to Texas during the looking process, but we got just exactly what we wanted and saved about $500-$600 by taking our time before the old piece of junk died and we had to do something in a hurry when there were no sales going on. And, of course, free shipping and installation, so it was a no-touch for us!
rightly, he has a large air compressor and used that with his staple gun to quickly get the wire mesh up. There are a number of large machines in his shop. Also remember, he is a geologist who had certification using explosives (think dynamite/plastic explosives). He's been a tool man all his life also including electricity installation knowledge. You would approve his shop.
While we were resting outside after putting the screen up, saw a squirrel on top of house. Bob said he could get his BB gun out at some point and cause that squirrel some trouble. If I get a garden growing, he will dispatch the squirrels.
There is never a dull moment here - went to another Indian casino in Oklahoma day before yesterday and won $300. I now have $600 socked away in the house with a few hundred in my purse to hit the next casino.
Bob is a blessing - there are 7 TVs in this house and the one in the kitchen is always on and showing Fox News. In the evening, we watch the Fox news programs first before we watch other programs. If he had been a liberal, I wouldn't be here.
He has a large size Maytag washer and dryer he has had over 15 years - if something goes out, he replaces it himself. I have a stacked Maytag washer and dryer in my townhouse - had them since 2001 with no problem. I bought that Maytag unit from Sears.

I sent along a first-aid kit. One of the military ones that has the pressure bandages for sucking chest wounds. "Just in case... and stay out of it unless someone gets a serious injury". They are both former military, recognize the kit, and have been trained.
Kids are so adorable as they get near their mid 30s. ;)

Grandpa might get to roast fresh wild pig soon?
He can then pack it in ice and make a fast run to my house.
I will process it if he did all of that right.
I won't eat pig meat that's stinky because of bad handling.
And I'm harsh about that.
I've been easygoing about everything, but I got serious about med kits, sucking chest wounds, and handling the meat right. I think they figured it out. ;)
They really are cute at their mid-30s.

Did you give them rubber gloves? I know someone who forgot to put on rubber gloves when handling a wild hog he shot, and he caught something..trichina, maybe..
His arms got all scaley, and gross, and he was on meds for months.
In other news, I injected the BTK into my Tromboncino Squash. Hope it kills the SVB. I looked for SVB eggs this morning, but not this afternoon..my bad. I took an extended siesta instead.
What could go wrong?

What caliber. I don't know how much hogs/peccary/boars in Arkansas weigh. I would think they eat better than down here in West Central TX.

You are a good grandpa! How Fresh Meat is handled makes All The Difference In The World as to the outcome of the product.
I expect that you enjoy your youngins/grandyoungins at any age - not just their mid 30s.

Not much doing today except lots of chores. Kids and grandkids are all comitted to BBQ at other relatives so we are one our own this holiday. I have a program on TV about the revolutionary war that I am listening to.

While frost free freezers are great, I am considering going back to the old fashioned kind. The frost free models IIRC, the way they work is that there is a temperary temperature fluctuation as part of the process.
The last two refrigerator/freezer and freezer have had episodes where they heat up too much and the food thaws. Since the episodes are periodic and have no pattern, the repair men have never been able to find anything wrong.
Upshot is that we have a freezer that we just gave up on using. It is supposed to have an alarm go off, if the temp gets warm enough to let food defrost. It doesn’t. After the 3rd time of loosing food, and Paying 75 bucks to hear no problem here, we unplugged it.
So I’m thinking of getting a small chest freezer for the basement. When it needs defrosting, hubby can take it outdoors for me, and on a hot day, it won’t take long at all. Even if I have to do it indoors, in the basement accidental spill won’t be a problem.
See my post #215. I have had some great frost free appliances in the past - newest not so great. It’s good price, and might work great. Just don’t get rid of the work horse right away.
I have to agree with you that the older appliances are better. Much better. There is simply no comparison. When we bought this house, we bought all new appliances, but kept and installed our refrigerator from the old house in the basement. It’s still going strong, while our new model is leaking, and we’re had repairmen out to fix various problems at least three times. It’s ridiculous. The old one is frost-free, but it just seems that these new-fangled machines are built to fall apart.

Green Beans are the thing going crazy right now. Hubby’s corn is almost 6 ft. tall, and has silks, so we may have some corn on the cobb soon.
No problems here. We got ours several weeks ago.
