No respect: Navy is the least prestigious military branch in the eyes of Americans
The Washington Times ^ | 05/23/2014 | S.A. Miller

Americans say the U.S. Army is the most important service branch to national defense, but the Marine Corps is still considered the most prestigious, said a Gallup poll released Friday.

The annual poll, timed to mark the start of the long Memorial Day weekend, showed that 26 percent of Americans say the Army is the most important military branch, followed closely by the Air Force at 23 percent. The Marine Corp was called the most important by 19 percent, the Navy by 17 percent and the Coast Guard by 3 percent, the poll found.

The Marine Corps has consistently been considered the nation’s most prestigious military branch, even if not the most important, with nearly half of Americans — 47 percent — saying they respect Marines the most. Semper Fi.

Apparently S.A. Miller is a moron. The story clearly states the Navy beat the Coast Guard by 14% does it not?

Odd ranking.

To my mind the ranking in order of importance to national defense would be Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines.

Have immense respect for Marines, but they’re most often used as an expeditionary force to project power overseas. Thank God (or, more precisely, the Navy and Air Force), that we don’t actually need the Marines and Army to defend our shores.

Naval bases are generally located in much nicer places than Army bases. About the only state side Army base that is located in a beautiful part of the country is Ft. Lewis in Tacoma, WA.

Coast Guard ain't military. Although they are now DHS, they used to be Dept of Transportation.

The Coast Guard in peacetime falls under Homeland Security, not DoD and is responsible for maritime law enforcement. It has always been a semi-military law enforcement and security agency except during wartime.

Say what you want about the Navy, but all I know is the only way we are ever going to get the Air Force or the Army to go to sea is if we "update" our aircraft carriers to suit their lifestyle;

Where does the title get “NO RESPECT” from?

Seriously, nothing in the articles suggests it has no respect.

Up front, I am retired Army.

It shocked me when I read during CGSC that the Navy is the power projection arm of the United States.

But after reading about it, I had to agree. When a Navy Carrier Group enters a foreign port, that country has nothing to match it.

However, when the US Army lands an Armored Division, it is only because the US Navy has already been there.

Dude that was like two years ago or something.

Heck the navy deserves to be disbanded just for that new slogan. Global force for good indeed.

The Coast Guard is the hard core around which the Navy forms in times of war.

And anyone who thinks differently is more than welcome to try to say so to the face of any random Coastie senior Chief ...

Not sure how I’d rank the branches, as I was never particularly inclined to do so, other than recognizing a certain special status for the Marines. But since all branches have all been grotesquely degraded by forced faggotization and PC-agenda social engineering, they’ve all certainly come down more than a few pegs, compared to where they used to be, in terms of the lofty respect I used to harbor for them.

Yeah, I mean, what can the Marines really do without the Navy?

Besides win on Guadalcanal ...

As another retired Army guy, I have to agree. When the Royal Navy ruled the ocean waves, the British ruled the world. We took their place in 1945 and the Navy was the key. When it comes time for fighting, however, this era is an Army and Marine show with everyone else chipping in and helping out.

Over the years mostly treasury then navy dept I think in WWI and WWII

Then treasury and transportation then most recently DHS

Kind of a red headed step child..... from parent to parent

I think they did see some action in wartime even in Indochina

On the seas I always thought of them as like highway patrol with bigger guns

Cannon even....likely have drones now too..
