Astronomy Picture of the Day -- Meteors, Planes, and a Galaxy over Bryce Canyon
NASA ^ | May 19, 2014 | (see photo credit)

Posted on 05/19/2014 3:51:18 AM PDT by SunkenCiv

Explanation: Sometimes land and sky are both busy and beautiful. The landscape pictured in the foreground encompasses Bryce Canyon in Utah, USA, famous for its many interesting rock structures eroded over millions of years. The skyscape above, photogenic in its own right, encompasses the arching central disk of our Milky Way Galaxy, streaks that include three passing airplanes and at least four Eta Aquariid meteors, and bright stars that include the Summer Triangle. The above image is a digital panorama created from 12 smaller images earlier this month on the night May 6. If you missed the recent Eta Aquariids meteor shower though, don't fret -- you may get an unexpected reprieve. Sky enthusiasts are waiting to see if a new meteor shower develops in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 24, when the Earth moves through a possibly dense cloud of dust and debris ejected by Comet 209P/LINEAR.

I have been working on night sky pictures for years.

Getting a photo like this is very difficult. It is spectacular.

I’m always impressesd by the milky way pictures like this one since we don’t actually see with the naked eye what the pictures show.

I thought so...until I looked closely.

There are duplicates of stars scattered at various points in the photo. If this was a fault of his stacking software, the misalignment would be apparent throughout, I would think.

Something has adulterated this pic, I'm just not sure what.

Maybe a composite of several elements photoshopped into one pic?

Maybe it's just my video card as I'm sure NASA confirmed the photo's veracity before publishing it.

It is a composite of twelve photos.

You can in the deep boonies. Tonapah, Nevada, for instance, has some of the clearest high altitude skies. A few miles out of town late at a no-moon night it does look like the picture (without assist or binoculars or telescope). It is really amazing.

My son and I spent a couple of days in Mexican Hat last summer, about 20 miles from Monument Valley. The stargazing at night was absolutely spectacular.

Possibly because this is a "digital panorama created from 12 smaller images."

Getting a digital panorama of the quality is difficult.

I do this stuff for a living. Can I simply state that it is a good composite photograph that the average vacationer would “probably” not be able to duplicate either in their camera or through generally weak computer skills.

Does that satisfy your anal nitpicking?

Sheesh, Buster. Aren’t you on your high horse today?

We had no way of knowing you were a pro. You seemed to think it was a single photo and I and others simply pointed out it is a montage. Not very good at that as you see lots of star patterns repeated.

Have a nice day.

For the most part you can see this out in the country away from all the lights. I remember after the 1994 Northridge earthquake when all the lights went out in Los Angeles. The sky lit up with the stars as I had seen them way out in the desert or back in Minnesota north of the Minneapolis.

BTW those are alien spacecraft crossing the sky.

Sorry if I came off as a jerk. Not my intent.

It’s just that after two or three responses stating different thing were wrong with it. It was a little frustrating—I just wanted to appreciate the picture.

Again, sorry for whining.

NP. People usually notify the author as soon as they see the misunderstanding or error without reading the entire thread to see if others have already pointed it out. It just goes with the FR territory — we all want to be “helpful” to others.

Can’t argue the point since we seem to be lacking in the spacecraft category.

I guess I need to find a dark place for a review of the night sky without moonlight. I ususally try to get a view of the Perseid Meteor shower, but the last three years and maybe more have been cloudy nights.

Your are certainly correct about Tonapah being deep boonies. I’m in Las Vegas a couple of times a year but haven’t yet been drawn to Tonapah. Now at least I have a reason.
