The Producer Price Index made available by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics this morning has now confirmed those fears. Consumers are seeing an immediate impact to their wallets in the form of food price inflation and in all likelihood the trend will continue going forward.
These latest numbers are serious. So much so that according to Zero Hedge, the last time food prices spiked by this much in one month, the resulting Arab Spring wave of revolutions tumbled governments across north Africa and the middle east.

And dairy. CA produces a lot of milk.
Got gardening?
“Blame those purists who stayed home on election day 2012 thinking Obama would be no worse than Romney.”
I agree with you. But, the some FR purists will be here shortly telling us differently.
As opposed to meat, rice can be imported more easily. I was traveling in SE Asia early this year and rice was plentiful and cheap. On a side note, the chicken fried rice in Pattaya, Thailand tasted better than anything I have come across in USA Chinese restaurants.
Geez, where do you both live?
A weekly flyer in our paper today has bacon for $3.49/pound. Yes, a pound is 16 ounces.
$4.45 a gallon here in Central Florida. It was $1.99 a gallon just before BHO took office.
Ground beef at BJs $3.99 a pound (3% fat) two weeks ago. Alaskan codfish filets 13.00/ lb today at Winn Dixie.
But our economy is in recovery ... Obama said so.
From the posts, one could surmise the devil’s been busy in our backyards.
Well, at least we are not wasting food production resources growing corn for ethanol .... never mind.
I live outside Houston. Haven’t seen bacon for $3.49/pound for several months now. Every now and then one of the stores around here will have it on a loss leader special at $4.50 or $5.00 but it’s an “off brand”, real fatty, they don’t advertise it and it’s the new 12 ounce pound.
They did have the large containers of Folgers last week though for $4.50 and I bought four, which was the max you could get. Went back later in the day and tried to buy four more but it was rejected at the register as my “card history” said I had already purchased four that day. So went back the next day and it was back up to the $9.99 price.
“Darn bacon is almost 6 bucks a pound.”
Consider yourself lucky.
Here in upstate NY our local TOPS store has Oscar Meyer regular grade bacon at $9.99 per pound (16 oz)!!
80% hamburger between $5-6 per pound. Store brand butter around $3.50+ pound. Brand name butter $4.30.
Thankfully we saw this coming and stocked up and vacuum-packed LOTS of meat this winter. IMHO, it is only going to get worse before it gets better.
One of the SS advocate organizations has been running an ad for several weeks stating that SS only went up just over 1% last year, but that Food Stamp benefits have been increased 30% since Obama took office.
$4.45 a gallon here in Central Florida.”
Wow, you must be among the 1%’ers to be able to buy a gallon at a time. I’ve cut back to just half a gallon a week. But I still insist on buying Borden’s so that might be part of it. Gallon of the brand of skim that bears the label “WICK approved” was $4.20 but it was more expensive than a couple of the other brands. I grew up on a farm and drank whole milk for a lot of years. Just can’t do skim milk.
Me also. Ours weren't actually Y2K but circa about that time. We occasionally crack a #10 can and the contents have always been fine.
Must be a matter of regional dairy markets. Here, in SE Washington State, no change in milk prices or only a dime or two depending on the brand. Other things in supermarkets have certainly gone up, though. I also notice the “out of stock” situation occurring more frequently; not sure why. Is production limited due to higher input costs or the product is going somewhere else or distribution problems or what?
I'm afraid to ask what the other 20% is. Is that number something about the fat content?
No kidding. Bacon is almost as expensive as the designer local no horomone/antibiotic farmer’s market bacon. Same group is beating the local grocery for the first time ever.
80% meat, 20% fat.
I'm in central Maryland. The "cheap" fatty bacon is at least $6.50/lb. maybe a little less on sale. The decent stuff is upwards of $8/lb.
The cheapest milk is at Costco for just over $3/gallon. At the grocery it will run you $4.20 at regular price.
I was thrilled to get chicken thighs & drums at $.99/lb. last week. Stocked up!

Address listed is off by a small amount or add apartment # that does not exist(#1A) and use cell phone for the phone #. Just reverse name or use initials, whatever works for you. Maiden name? Think about it! I use my name and daughters home address in another state?? Say you forgot it and ask to use the store card...cashiers do have one!
I always have 2 since I might have the wrong handbag!
