The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Yes, it makes the birds sing, makes us happy, makes us sing, too. Oh, the joy!

I’ve been on your ping list for several years now and our garden is a small plot in the ground with about 12 containers going around the patio. The spouse is very into gardening this year. His early Father’s Day gift was a membership to Mike’s Seed of the Month Club from averagepersongardening. It’s a great hobby for him. We have peas, tomatoes, cukes, Swiss chard, radishes, melons, all kinds of peppers and more herbs going now. The youngest caught the bug and she has all kinds of flowers going as seedlings and has given some away to friends and teachers. She planted some in egg shells(we recently got backyard chickens and always have an abundance of brown eggs). So thank you for your dedication to running this thread and for the pings. I look forward to it each week.

Turns out I've been accidentally walking on some volunteer cilantro that self-seeded. Oops. I did quit walking on it.

It’s been a wonderful day for us. Sunshine, warm temps, freshly groomed puppies, Scooter part of the family again.

My wife is cooking a ham and trimmings today, so we will have plenty all weekend. She may be making a chess pie or buttermilk pie, I didn’t ask because I don’t care which she makes.

The only downside is the Ms.Gang cancelled on coming out tonight. So no family get together. It’s just us old folks and poodles this weekend.

Texas has had wonderful weather this week. It was supposed to have rained the past couple days but, as usual, nothing here. Temps in the 70s.

About 95% of the garden has been planted. All that's left are the melons and to fill in the empty spots later on. The berries are blooming and most of the transplants are perking up... except the tomatoes that hubby insisted on helping with and wouldn't listen about not wearing big leather work gloves on delicate little plants, sigh. Those will be some of the empty spots that will need filling in with something else. Ha, I know just the thing. Spaghetti squash! He hates spaghetti squash. Oh, I did another very bad thing and planted the hot peppers where the deer begin their munch fests, tee hee!

Speaking of a very bad thing, there were feathers all over the garden this morning. At first, I thought it was white berry petals. There was no other sign so hope the bird is ok. The dogs should have sounded the alarm but they were too exhausted helping with the garden this week so slept hard. One was so tired, she could barely wake up enough yesterday afternoon to go out with me. Poor little sleepy face. They rush to the door when they hear, “It's time to go to the garden.”

I opened the kitchen door to get some fresh air, and my doggy has been enjoying going in and out, and laying on the patio getting some rays.LOL

Thanks for the feed back. Keep posting and let us know how you are progressing. I am jealous of your chickens in weather like today, but during the winter, I don’t miss the responsibility.LOL

Agnes, I just got these Cilantro seeds from Bountiful Gardens, so these are new. I'll see what happens. The Cilantro plants that came are a bust. I was able to transplant several but I expect them to die as they are still totally limp.

I transplanted two T squash so that is 5 I have in their permanent pots outside. Still bothered by tomatoes, and there was a Big Boy and 5th of July and Cherry Punch in the backup set of tomatoes that looked very good, so put those each in a large container. I have no idea how many tomatoes in large containers are out there now. I'll check on that tomorrow.

Now, I have a number of cucumbers that need to be in large containers but I am now out of potting soil mix. Have to go to Lowes soon.

Sunflowers:
I have five or six or some number, of sunflowers in small pots that need out of there. I think I'm going to actually dig holes in the dirt next to the back wall, and stick them in there in a row. That part is dirt not covered by the landscaping material. That is where I had beans last year that were baked by the sun as they were attached to the wall. I'll do that tomorrow. I have one of those round hole metal thingys to punch in the ground to plant bulbs. That should make the holes.

Here in Zone 4b, we usually harvest the last week of July. Be gentle, don’t bruise them. Let them dry in the shade for a few days.

Our group will be smaller than usual, but we’ll have a few.
Youngest daughter is cooking lamb roast. I’ll be making the taters, and some green beans from last year’s garden.

Thinking about making a blackberry cobbler from our wild blacberries that I canned last year. Usually have salad fixin’s from the garden, but my lettuce is behind this year.

Wait, you mean Moo wasn’t out tending HER garden during the shut down? You mean it’s really professional gardeners on my tax dollar tending it?!?

The shut down was six months ago so why is this just now making headlines? Slow day and nothing else available to put 0’s name in the papers?

Well, her arms, fingers, and hands weren’t broke, so why didn’t she attend her own danged garden? It’s plant abuse and neglect of the highest seriousness!

“Turns out I’ve been accidentally walking on some volunteer cilantro that self-seeded. Oops. I did quit walking on it.”

See, you have Cilantro all over so that stuff grows for you. I still want some seed from you as whatever you have must have a strong will to live and not be a picky as what I got in plants. I don’t know if these present seeds will come up.

Well, I don’t have much luck getting Hubby to listen to me sometimes either. However, I do often get to say I told you so. And then the Schadenfreude if especially delightful.LOL
