All the peppers and B. sprouts survived the 29 degree cold. It was about 60 F in the covered raised beds. We put in two trouble lights and a larger 100 watt light from our cabin basement to keep things toasty.

I still have to re-assess my garden after yesterday morning's freezing drop in temperature. Some tomato and bean plants were damaged, along with the fresh growth on my loquat trees. All the Malabar spinach seems unaffected, but those plants seem to be rather invasive, so I'm not too worried there.
I've been wanting to plant more okra, but I'll have to wait a couple days until the soil warms up enough to germinate them.

Outstanding news. I haven’t checked all the perrenials yet, but the one’s that had the most blooms were covered. Hubby reported the the covers with the 100 watt bulbs were very toasty, but he didn’t actually measure the temps. So we know it was warm, and that those came through just fine.

Took off all covers off plants. They look fine, made it through the 30s temps if it got that cold.

sockmonkey, the only plant hurt was the Tycoon tomato in a large pot. It was small and appears it was broken off someway but didn't see the broken off part. I have three other Tycoons as backups that are as large or larger than that one, so will put one of these in that big pot. So, I still have Tycoons.

I really hope we are now over cold temps. It's 12:40 pm and the temp in garden is 66. Sun is out.

We have finally struggled into the 50s (barely). Sunshine has finally come out. Still not warm enough to bring the babies out. If the concrete warms up this afternoon, I’ll take them out for some real sun and warmth.

My kitchen is barely 70 degrees, so I like to get the stuff outside once it’s around 77 to speed up the germination.

The wind is bad here again today. I’m watching the kidz at their house, so gardening is out for today.

I had a low of 38, but officially, at the airport, it was 34. It was only the second time this cold season that it got down to forecasted temp here at the ranch. I haven’t been out to the gardens, but I don’t think we would have lost anything.

Got my scooter part yesterday. :) 8 days from hong kong to here. That’s better than they estimated.

Comparing the 2 parts, I can see the wear now. I wish I had bought 2 of them now that I know it’s life expectancy.

Will be soldering wires to it soon, I just rounded up all the stuff to attach the wiring to it. Good thing I am so organized. Lie!

Tomorrow is supposed to be 73, then 79 for a couple of days.

We have the other half of the Ms. Gang of kids and gkids coming out this weekend. That plus 2 dogs should make for plenty of excitement.

Yesterday with everything covered, Prissy chased off one squirrel who was actually in the garden and kept another at bay that was on the wall, plus a cat was in the garden. There are two white and black cats that appear on the wall at times now but that is only the second time one has been in the garden. I don’t want an animal in the garden that could drop fleas out there. Prissy has no fleas and I want to keep it that way.

Your company coming will give you something to think about, deal with, other than illness/feeling bad.

The leaves on the orange tree were drooping the past two days but they are looking normal today. Don't know about orange trees, whether or not that cold weather stopped oranges from developing or whether they were going to develop or not anyway.

I have kept new sugar water in the hummer feeder but haven't seen any of them for a number of days.

I went out to water since the plants had been covered so they got no water from rain.

I spoke too soon about plants - my two largest cucumber plants, one if stretched out would be 12 inches or so and another about 8 inches, are limp. That is what happened to the last cucumbers when there was cold weather and I covered them then, too, but they went limp and died. Hope these recover.

I hope so too. They like warm weather to be sure. I am suprised that the cold weather/cover didn’t work.

We transplanted the tomatoes into the raised beds today. Two look great, four others look a little jittery. All are covered in the frost blankets with hoops.

I think they’ll be OK. Maybe the four didn’t get hardened off as much as the two big girls...

So sorry to hear of the loss. I broke a Tygress tomato last year that was about four feet tall. I scotch taped it back together, and it looked pretty pathetic, but the crazy thing grafted itself back together, and put out tomatoes until I pulled it up in December.

Our weather guys have been saying that our freeze Monday night was the last one of the season. I hope so. BTW, the Tromboncino squash are back to looking like their happy selves today.

And despite scarifying, and soaking my cucuzza squash seeds, which are in the greenhouse, no tiny green stuff is poking out of the pots. Maybe I should put them under the growlight.

Forgot to ask, how are your new Cilantro seedlings doing?

“Forgot to ask, how are your new Cilantro seedlings doing?”

I feel dumb about the Cilantro plants. I think each little long stem with leaves is a separate plant, but I’m not sure they aren’t connected to a base under the soil.

In one cup, today, it seemed to me, some of those stems were sort of out of the soil. So I took a slim seed planter thingy and pushed it down in that area, and immediately ran into a root ball. It appears that whole little cup is stuffed with roots.

All those stems are flopped over on all three cups. These up to five-six inch long stems are mostly green but I see some dead ones.

I need to look up a Cilantro plant to see how it is supposed to look. Maybe I need to plant these in larger pots now to get them out of those little cups??

Do Cilantro plants have stems that are standing up? Seems to me, they shouldn’t be limp. I’ve been too busy to deal with these except to get them under grow light and water, since it was cold anyway and couldn’t put them out.

If you have Cilantro, what does yours look like?

I'm sending this to my entire list I have for the gardening thread. Why?

BECAUSE THE EGYPTIAN WALKING ONIONS HAVE GROWTH ON TOP THAT IS TURNED LIKE IT'S GOING TO THE GROUND.

There is a new growth type on a number of these plants and this new growth is bending over at the top. They have to grow bulbs at the ends before they fall over, but I see no bulbs yet. However, this is the first I've seen of this new growth at the top - it's different looking growth.

These walking onions are fantastic plant creatures, put on this earth to always make onions. That is just so special.

I’ve never grown anything but chives, so this is new to me.

New cilantro should be compact and leafy.
Are they too crowded or not in full sun?

Cilantro likes it cool...if in a window, make sure it isn't getting too much heat. It should NOT be limp.

For a real taste treat, grow cilantro microgreens...more potent flavor, easy to harvest. Amazing flavor when used in salsa...

I seeded to start 24 new tomato plants, 12 jalapeno plants, 12 New Mexico chili plants and 6 cantaloupe. It is what it is.
