The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Yeh, we figured that the rain barrels and swimming pool could do double duty as garden water, or drinking and washing water after treatment. I have a stash of supplies and filtration devices for that.

We also keep 24 gallons of water on hand for short term needs. Then there’s the well, with 2 generators for well power. Last resort: rocket well bucket.

My first year here, i mowed in circles to get the leaves in a pile then ride over them over and over till they were just dime sized bits. Grass is very precious living on a steep slope with no sun, so I try to preserve any that is already growing to prevent erosion.

What! Did you have a mini tornado - it bent metal or tossed metal around?

I think it was a microburst..My Gunsmith lives probably 2 miles north as the crow flies, and he said he got lots of rain. I got no rain, and a destroyed deck cover.

Hubby’s the one who climbs on the roof to get the leaves off 2-3 times a year. He left them up there one year and the water got above the flashing and poured into the attice and into the garage. Lesson learned the hard way but that was the time we got 8” in one evening so it might have happened leaves or not. Everytime it comes a hard rain, we have to get out in it and sweep it off the porch or it comes into the house.

The poor little plants are going in and out and in and out of the house. Had to take them from outside to the garage because it was supposed to come a big storm two days ago but it split, as usual, when the clouds saw the house. So, took them back out today to get some sun but then we had hail warnings so back in again. So far tonight it rained enough to get the edge of the porch wet. It’s supposed to rain this weekend but at least the peanuts need to get into the ground Tues or Wed.

“I got no rain, and a destroyed deck cover.”

That is strange to get no rain and that destruction and the gun guy getting rain two miles away.

Is the deck cover completely destroyed? Can’t be fixed? Have you been able to check greenhouse?

My advice - stay away from Ambien. It's bad news. I'm not a big fan of SSRI's.

I used to give my guys phenergan for sleeping problems. It's mild, and won't cause the muscle twitching that benadryl will.

My daughter had hail in SA about an hour ago on the Northwest Side near UTSA..Anybody else get hailed on?

Checkout post #186. We got about 1/2 inch. The hail knocked all the old leaves out of the oaks and provided some relief for the property. The chickens, ducks, and geese will have fresh grass to graze on soon.

The deck cover is destroyed. Lol, I should make one out of cattle panels since my greenhouse was unscathed..I think the microburst hit down on the deck, then it kind of sucks it up, and it just ripped it to pieces.

I had run out and closed the cloches over the T Squash in case it hailed.. My trash can lid was in the next block..

I could hear sirens a couple of blocks away after the microburst, so I think it must have done something worse than messing up deck covers to somebody.

Don't be blaming the weather on me. Next thing you know, the natives are upset and I'm trussed up, all ready to be thrown in a volcano... I'm done with all that.

Straight line winds cause more damage than twisters. Prayers up. It is that time of year.

Heh-heh!

You're in luck. We don't have any volcanoes close by ;)

Benadryl did not even work on me. I would take phenergen if I could get someone to perscribe it for me, but they won’t. So I am stuck with ambien, but I rarely take it.

I just sleep when I get sleepy, and ignore the clock. Since I am retired, most of the time, I can do that. I have told everyone likely to call me, what the deal is, and asked them not to call me until afternoon, and I turn my phone off, unless someone else is home to take the calls.

When I do take it, I break it in half.

slopes are challenging. We planted our grass seed after we built our house. On the second lot, we cleared some trees, and planted some grass, but a lot of it is still understory habitat, so we have lots of wild flowers.

In the spring we don’t even mow it until the flowers are finished. We also never water the lawn. What grow grows. What doesn’t doesn’t. Not going to use well water for the lawn. We have some dandelions, but we like yellow flowers, and the greens are one of the first things with vitamin c that are edible come spring.

So far the slopes that we do have are doing fine.

My pain specialist gave me cheap low dose Trazodone to help sleep due to fibromyalgia. It is a prescription but it’s a cheap med. I’ve been taking it for years. Without it, I don’t go into deep sleep, my brain would stay half awake. After taking the pill, I also keep the TV on and concentrate on that, then I sleep. If I don’t concentrate on TV, my brain does not shut down. Excess electricity in my brain also goes to my muscles (fibromyalgia also), so I take Amitriptyline which shuts down excess electricity to muscles. Amitriptyline stops nerve pain, regular pain pills do nothing for nerve pain.

I'll have to research Trazodone. The ambien seems to be fine, but I don't like some of the potential side effects, so I'll see how they compare. Might ask the Doc to switch.

TV is funny for me. I have to have some sort of noise like a fan or rain sounds on DVD to go to sleep - silence keeps me awake, and my mind churns too.

TV sometimes keeps me awake. However, if there is an interesting show that I want to watch, and I lay down, I am almost guaranteed to doze off and miss most of it.

I go to sleep for about 3 hours, wake up and can't go back to sleep. Mom used to call this wide awakes. She had similar sleeping problem from middle age on.

—noise like a fan or rain sounds on DVD to go to sleep—

We both have mp3 players with music and preaching on them. My wife has a rainstorm on hers to use at bedtime to sleep. Or at least she did before becoming medicated for different problems.

We don’t have desert, we take our handful of meds instead!
