Honorable mention to the short-lived comic "Bagpipe Cat"
Bagpipe Cat - the cat who loves bagpipes, Ayn Rand, and Guinness Stout:

Supremely Bad: Doonesbury, This Modern World, Nancy
Not funny!
Bad enough that they're good: Red Meat, and Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles (defunct)
Good: Bizarro, Get Fuzzy, Family Circus, Day by Day, For Better or Worse, and I liked Cathy. Why? The artwork was horrible, but it was a time capsule of the 70s-90s neurotic working woman.

For alternative comix, NOBODY beats R. Crumb.
What a talent. But half the time it's so involved with Crumb's inner dialogue I have no idea what he's getting at.
Also loved Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers.
Some of the late 60s/early 70s comix are just unreadable.
The Checkered Demon, and Zippy.
Absolute psychedelic nonsense.
Bill Griffith is a good artist, but I can't stand Zippy.

Re: #2; agree with Pogo and for worst it has to be a tie between Doonsbury and Boondocks.

I’m sure that it was Steve Canyon where I read it and then saw mentioned over the years in an article, or book or two, but I can’t find any internet mention of it.
Do you think it was the strip you mentioned?

Gus Arriola's "Gordo"
Calvin and Hobbes
Peanuts
Al Capp's L'il Abner
All had a wealth of characters and great story lines.

Herman worst? No way. I might just have to report you to the moderators. I love Herman. My autographed Herman book was devoured by my kids, who somehow got my twisted sense of humor.
I met Jim unger at a book signing. Pretty much Surfer Dude.

Best:

- The Far Side
- Blondie - never seen a VPL on her
- Li'l Abner - Shmoos, Joe Blksfpk?
Worst: Absolutely the worst - Doonesbury - that "Jim Crow" sequence is ridiculous
