The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
We have used Preen from Sam’s club for three years on our plot. It is still good, but wife wants to put down some new because of too many holes in it. I will take it and use it on my raised containers this year. I think it would go 5 yrs, but not done that yet.
Thanks to everyone providing tips. I'll run down every one.
Cheers from the Ozark plateau.
That’s nice. Here’s hoping she has an excellent experience. Our oldest daughter had her first garden last year and it did well.
She moved to Kansas in December, and is in an apartment so no garden this year.
Sounds like most things are going well. Hope you get the rain you need.
Thanks.
Unexpected babysitting tonight. So I’ll be here until son-in-law gets here. I spent the day doing spring cleaning in the shop. I found a bunch of missing tools and now can get to the big power tools.

Ha! I just got off duty babysitting. Thinking about taking a run to Walmart to look at their garden stuff.
I though of you and your handi skills and wanting a strawberry tower.

Sick. Snowing. Going back to bed.
Get well soon. I’m still coughing and hacking, but not feeling too bad. Going to bed early though in just a little bit.
Thanx..I do like things made from pallets.
Hope you feel better real quick.
You’re welcome. Youtube has many pallet to project videos.
My wife said they have some good looking pallets at work, so I asked her to take the trailer Monday to get them. She said they were American pallets, so they are probably oak. The asian pallets, who knows what they are. Each has purpose. Free oak is appealing to me. I cut up some old cabinets that were store fixtures once, to get the wooden tracks for sliding doors for a garage project from the same guy in the video. He does easy, beginner woodworking projects, sometimes tacky, sometimes useful, and lots of pallet projects.
We are supposed to plant the ground level garden tomorrow, put up some window planters, also, I am going to start a few ghost peppers seeds, along with cukes, t-squash, and something else! Can’t remember it.
It’s supposed to be 82 today and cloudy with rain showers setting in this evening. I still have our debris pile from the ice storm. It will be 100 before we know it. Today is planting day, according to my wife. I will start some seeds. I’m already looking to expand my raised container garden for more ghost peppers. The existing ones did not like the hard winter, they are alive, but...
I’ve just read unsulfured molasses is good for the garden.
I wonder if it will rid the garden of fire ants. We put
solidified molasses out for the cows and the fire ants stayed away. Has anyone else heard of this. Molasses is
full of good things. The article said to spray it onto the
soil.
Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well, then snow on top of
that, I’d go back to bed too.
I’m off to work in the community garden. Till later.
johnny, sorry to hear you’re ‘puter is down.
I believe that I heard a prominent gardener say that molasses was a natural pesticide, but it was thinned and may have had something else added to it. In my spare moments today, I will see if I saved that video.
“Sick. Snowing. Going back to bed.”
You can’t get sick - I need you available to answer my gardening questions when I have them. :o) Take some powerful medicine.
It’s at 40 degrees here - yesterday was 70. I have to go right now to the co-op for youngest daughter to pick up her produce for the week. See ya later.
That Preen fabric, it says it’s not UV protected. Are you using it with mulch? Here, it won’t have mulch so will get full sun and that’s what some of the reviews complain about (but I don’t believe reviews all the time). I garden barefooted to get a better toe grip, so mulching would hurt my feet and it’s work to put it in and I’m lazy.
