The scene, discovered by archaeologists in Illinois more than 40 years ago, depicts one of the most extravagant acts of violence ever documented in ancient America: A thousand-year-old pit found under a tall earthen mound, lined from corner to corner with skeletons — 53 in all — neatly arranged two bodies deep, each layer separated by woven fiber mats.

counting ribs?
They were either playing with matches or someone left the stove on.
So it wasn’t small pox.
Interesting.
Either one leg is a bit shorter than the other or that extra rib throws them off balance or maybe there is a sashay bone in there somewhere...
Chicago and San Francisco were bigger and more notable examples, but there are others.
Somehow, I doubt the ability of Cahokia to deal with a large fire, especially if the weather conditions were right.
For all we know, the sacrifices were made in an attempt to bring rain.
Without clear evidence that the fire was the result of hostile action, or that the sacrifices were captives and not residents, all is supposition.
Consider: If the local burials used to establish the tooth size baseline were Cahokians, and the mass burials were captives from another tribe, then the entire idea of setting a baseline on tooth size of locals and comparing the teeth in the mass burial to determine gender falls on its keester, as there are different gene pools involved.
Even today, the astute can tell the difference between different tribal lineages by appearances determined by underlying skull morphology.
People have asked me what CE stands for over the years. I always tell them it stands for the "Christian Era" and so far nobody has disputed that with me. So if this was an attempt by atheists to do away with "AD" - it backfired pretty badly.
On CSI and NCIS they seem very sure of their sex ID based solely on pelvic bone shape.
***when I watch a female walk from behind, there is a noticeable “swinging” motion.***
I saw a well dressed man do that in Santa Fe years ago. He could really swish. He also carried a “male purse”.
My wife and I tried not to burst out laughing.
Must have been girly men.
Years ago, when I was in graduate school, I was told by a professor that I could not use “A.D.” and “B.C.” because those were religious designations. I was informed that I must use “CE” - meaning “Common Era” and “BCE” - meaning “Before the Common Era”. I asked the professor Who exactly made the Common Era the common era. He just looked at me. We both knew the answer was Jesus. He then smiled and shook his head.
I have never heard of this horrible event until today. I forget that scores of civilizations began, thrived and depleted on this american continent long, long before recorded history. Long before Christopher Columbus of Leif Ericson on Iceland had their close encounters. I for one, would not wish to live on such an area if I had a choice. Too much misery embedded into it’s essence. No, such ‘misery’ could never be substantiated to everyone’s satisfaction, but I would still stay out of that area.
Okay, but by your explanation there, it wasn’t rejected by folks who didn’t know what it really stood for.
I agree that we can hijack it. I’m not sure what that gains us.
I notice things like this, because I see them as skirmishes in the cultural wars.
Many of these things, we just accept and move on. The Left gets it’s way by default.
I thought we should have raised cain over the flipping of the colors on election maps. Traditionally, the Republican party was signified by the (true) blue. Then the Left flipped it. Not a whimper from our side.
Hell of a way to hold this nation steady in the storm.
So was this kind of thing the reason somebody torched the place?

What would compel people to burn their home and leave--especially to burn food resources?
A likely cause would be disease or infestation which could not otherwise be purged, either affecting the people directly, or contaminating the food supply (or even an infestation of spiders or other nasty critters which was causing severe problems).
Burning the place would eliminate pests/pathogens, and keep others from being affected as they might be if they occupied the structures or used the resources.
Without the means to purge, say, a massive infestation of brown recluse spiders, or to eliminate a pervasive and toxic mold, moving on, burning the place, and cremating the dead might have been the only viable alternative for the survivors.
Not every destructive thing is attributable to warfare.
***and that the bodies appeared to have been cremated, and not so much caught in the fire. ***
Years ago, I knew some people who worked on the Salmon Ruins excavation. They said it appeared the pueblo caught on fire, burned fast, and a woman babysitting all those children attempted to lead them to safety when the roof they were walking on collapsed.
The cedar and juniper roofing burns real fast.
***and cremating the dead might have been the only viable alternative for the survivors.***
Years ago I read a book about Earl Morris, who excavated many of the ruins along the San Juan, Animas and La Plata rivers. He stated that he had only seen ONE cremation burial when a pot that had washed out, found floating in the river, from some ruin was found to contain human ashes.
He did not excavate Salmon ruins as the owner of the property, named Salmon, did not want pot hunters tearing up his property.
I know one thing that does annoy me and that's the presidential debates. They always seem to be moderated by some liberal working for NY Times or PBS. You never see anybody like Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity moderating a presidential debate. Why is that?
Also, the format of the debate stinks, with the 2 minute time limits and the 1 minute allowed for responses. This basically reduces the debate to a contest of sound bites and one-liners. Candidates should have unlimited time to give their answers so that they are not cut off.
To keep one candidate from monopolizing all the time, just give each candidate 45 minutes of speaking time in a 90 minute debate. When one candidate is done answering, he hits a button and the time starts elapsing from the other candidate's clock. They keep going until one candidate runs out of time. Then the other candidate can use the remaining time for an uninterrupted rebuttal.
After losing that many children, a community might relocate simply because the memory of that loss was too much to bear.
