The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I forgot to say, I have ONE STRAWBERRY BLOSSOM!

Out of 44+ plants, maybe I will get one strawberry.

I have guarded those plants for so many months I should receive an honorary Security Guard badge.

I see Home Depot has lemon, lime, and orange trees for 18 bucks in their circular from today’s newspaper in TX.

I don’t know why I have never planted strawberries, I just love them.

Gracie got a hold of a dried ghost pepper that I had let lie on the soil in the planter. I saw her playing with it, but would not bite it. If she had bit it, I would know! Yesterday, she saw her first cigarette fire on the driveway from the guy that cleaned the yard, she looked at it with curiosity, eased closer and closer till she got a whiff of smoke up the nose. I dont think we will have to worry about her smoking or putting hot pepper on her food.

I think I am going to sprout some more ghost peppers for my new, not yet built, raised bed pepper garden. Not that I need them, but I enjoy giving them to friends.

I grew Cherokee Purple — once. It generated a huge deformed compound blossom from which grew a tomato which had a hole in its middle and was like an enormous purple doughnut.

Rice is my go to. Mix in a little chicken or vanilla ensure. I also give a few teaspoons of water sweetened with raw honey when they are coughing.

Me too. My basement is usually around 70 degrees or more, except for the computer corner which is on the north side. If we are going to have these kind of winters, I am going to have to work on some sort of additional insulation for the walls and the window.

Thanks for the recipe, I’ll have to try it. Vinegar is one of my favorite go to cleaners for all sorts of stuff. It’s even a decent hair rinse agent after shampooing.

Yikes, I hope I'm never your friend. I prefer tamer things.

The sun was out this morning so I got eighteen little starting pots ready for seed..I still have a 72 cell starter thing to get ready..For sure I will put some toy choi in there, since it seems to practically grow itself.

sockmonkey, you are my friend already :)

I never give them without warning, though, and only to lovers of things hot.

I just repotted the replacement tomatoes from egg cartons to 16 oz cups. I think these guys are going to stay inside for a week or so before I put them out in the cold frame to harden off.

I'm hoping these are the last tomatoes I have to start this spring.

I just looked at my seedlings. They are still small, I may put them in 16oz cups for a week or so. The store bought plants are ready to go in. I am apprehensive about planting this week end.

100deg temps hit us so early, though. It is a gamble on either end.

I'm going to wait until at least the 20th. The 13th is last average freeze date here, but I'm not trusting that a lot this year.

rightly, I have 56 at 10:57 am. I hope the sun stays out so the potting soil in fabric pots dries out so I can plant some of the 80 onion bulbs I have. I'll try to plant them tomorrow after sun today helps dry them out. Yesterday's sun was the first day of sun we have had in a while, as you know.

Johnny, yesterday I transplanted the tobacco plants, put one in each larger pot. I wonder about these as their roots aren't very long. The leaves look nice but they are pretty much flat on the surface of the soil, no growth upward. I hope this transplanting gets them going more than they are.

There is still not one seedling up that was planted in that Jiffy seed starter. In the other seed starter, I'm already at the point I need to transplant several kinds of peas and broccoli, the corn is up in two cups, and other plants. But, I had four cups of corn in that Jiffy and I need those plants and there is nothing there.

I checked Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart on the web and the only seed starter any of them had is the Jiffy seed planter things. Lowes does have Miracle Gro seed starter but customer comments says the same thing about that - the starter holds no water and the seeds don't sprout. Today, I'm ordering the kind I had before and will start over with new seeds of the type I have in those Jiffy cups.

That's about right on the tobacco. It stays flat for quite a while, and then it suddenly starts growing up. They sound fine.

“That’s about right on the tobacco. It stays flat for quite a while, and then it suddenly starts growing up. They sound fine.”

That’s a relief.

I did just order the Espoma seed starter, four bags of 16 quarts each. I’m not running out of that again. I am distraught those Jiffy cups have nothing coming up. I need that corn and other things up as the corn in the two Espoma cups are already so tall, I need to transplant them into larger pots plus a number of others in Espoma already need to be transplanted. Espoma must have magic dust in their bags.
