I get messages from a website called Linked In all the time. It appears to be some sort of business oriented facebook thingie. But, I can't figure out what it does.
You are correct, it’s a business oriented social network. Recruiters regularly troll it so it’s worth being in it if you are looking for a job. Drawback is it’s a social network of professionals and therefore boring - who wants to talk about work at home? I am in it but rarely log in, unless I am having trouble sleeping.
Not anymore Arlis. It is becoming more important by the day. Just this week I had an Inspector that used to work for me request a recommendation to his page. A potential employer told him that he would not be hired without it. A good six-figure job with benefits. I wrote it for him two nights ago.
I haven't heard back yet except for a quick "Thank you." just a few minutes after I posted it to his page. That company actually has a LinkedIn 'specialist' on staff, whatever that is.

Linkedin is like recommendation sources one puts on a resume’ or personal reference list - you almost never find anyone who will say anything bad....and that’s because no one gets linked in to you except those that you approve.......
It’s #1 weakpoint IMHO.
You are, of course correct, but there is one major difference. The reason the company requires the LinkedIn recommend instead of resume' is because they use it to thoroughly vet ME because of my page. Major difference. Very useful and easy for the client that is doing the vetting and the hiring.
LinkedIn asked me for my password. Assuming it was the password to my LI account, I complied.
Soon got an email saying oh, no, we want the password to your email account. Yeah, right, in what universe would I give you that!
LI was toast to me after that. Still get email from LI mentioning people I do know. Can’t contact them through LI using your private email address - you are notified that is not allowed.
Makes sense. You can smell out a person with an attitude issue sometimes on LI.......just another bullet to add to the vetting process......
I think LinkedIn is a great way to sniff through the BS of companies and their employees and typical "resume speak."
I think I'm in the minority on FR, but I see it as a very valuable tool. Lately the articles being referenced by "inlfuencers" means its becoming a bit of a daily spot for me to find interesting articles about my areas of business interest.
I don't like that feature either. I don't need to have everyone I have ever sent an email to, to suddenly getting request.
I get a lot of phishing emails from non-LI people requesting a connection. I always make sure that I am actually logged in to LI and review the requests from there.
It's a handy tool, as long as people don't try to make it into Facebook, although I call LI, "skynet". :-)
I’ve had a few friends get laid off from where I work, and I found it a great way to keep in touch with them. I have just a handful of contacts there. I have the “free” account so I can’t do much on LI.
