11 Features You No Longer See in Cars

It's hard to picture what today's teenagers will wax nostalgic about 30 years from now when they reminisce about their first car. (It still required gasoline, perhaps?) Who knows how automobiles will change in the future; what we do know is how different they are today from 30 or more years ago. If you fondly remember being surrounded by two or three tons of solid Detroit steel with a whip antenna on the front from which you could tie a raccoon tail or adorn with an orange Union 76 ball, and enough leg room that you didn't suffer from phlebitis on long road trips, then you might also miss a few of these.

1. Bench Seats

Without the bench seats how are the gay guys going to get 8 in the front seat?

External radio antenna for the orange Union 76 ball.

I remember a 350CC kickstart dirtbike back in the 70’s...
I wasn’t big enough at the time to ever start the thing.

And sometimes they kicked back. That would have launched me 30 feet.

Bench seats and a shifter on the floor was fun when you had a date in the car.

I wish my Harley had a kicker on it.

In Florida there are no hills to roll down to start a dead engine, so I have to get a bunch of guys to push the bike when that happens.

It helps that I am a gal! :-)

FULL SIZE SPARES

OK, let’s play a little game. Who here on FR has the newest car with a full size spare? (Can’t be a full size truck/SUV, those vehicles are too heavy for donuts, so of course, they have full size spares).

I’ll start. My 2002 Infiniti has a full size spare on an identical-to-the-rest-of-the-other-four 18” alloy. So I have an ‘02. Anyone have a newer model?

I miss the miss the mechanical roll-up windows. Came close to buying one of the few remaining models which offered them, but it would've been a special order.

Roll-up windows never wear out. The electronic motors in modern cars eventually do.

How about the little opera windows where you could flick your ashes out of?

Air conditioners that hung from the passenger window. You put water into and the air blew moist air into the passenger compartment. Only worked in dry climate.

I’m not sure most of these deserve to be called features, a lot of them were just how things were done before we thought better of it. Like bench seats, they just suck.

Proud to say I’m still sportin’ a 1981 Full Size Bronco. 5.8Lit.4 barrel ! Needs just a tad bit-o-body-work and a replacement front bumper. Ruined the bumper PUSHING those petite little SUV wanna-be’s outta my way at intersections ! ! Liberal, chatting on their dumb phone, women were, I suppose, waiting for a particular shade of green before moving along. Do I get extra points for the electric “vehicle” with the coexist bumper sticker ? ! ? ! ?

I just gotta say. Good riddance. Driving my newer vehicle is a heck of a lot more comfortable than my old beater with all those ‘options’. When I have to put the truck in 4x4 I sure don’t miss climbing out to turn the hub locks.

Do they still make windows that you crank to roll down?

Power windows SUCK, especially if you want just a wee bit of a gap at the top.. Or try and roll your windows up or down without the keys in the ignition. ARGH!!!! Or you end up under water with the windows up and your electrical shorts out. GLUB GLUB!!!

"Ashtrays are still around, the roach burner lighters are missing."

What's a roach burner lighter?

Ashtrays are missing in the back seat doors.
Had a smoker friend in(on?) the back seat who was a smoker. She had to open the window to flick. That's when I remembered those cute ashtrays.
