Rebooting 'Cosmos': Neil DeGrasse Tyson Explains Why Iconic TV Series Returns in 2014

Rebooting Carl Sagan's seminal "Cosmos" miniseries three decades later is almost impossible — unless you happen to be renowned astrophysicist and science educator Neil deGrasse Tyson.

For those who may have missed the original back in 1980, "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage" was a documentary series on PBS that explored the universe as well as the history of scientific discovery. Sagan's topics of discussion ranged from Japanese folklore to debunking astrology to the ultimate fate of the stars and galaxies that surround us.

Now Tyson is hosting a new version of the TV series called "Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey," with the first episode airing in March on Fox and the National Geographic Channel.

What he said on the subject
Yeah, the long way around to avoid saying - I'm an atheist.

hard to find a science program that doesn’t do that to some degree or less. I’m not a christian, but I still dismiss the spew and watch for the science content.

I liked it too, but I have a feeling they insert some politically correct “science” into the new version, although Sagan did that too. I’ll bet they will talk about how “fragile” the earth’s climate is or some similar nonsense.

What I find interesting is why the “scientists” find it necessary to get political.

If you take the time to watch the entire conference, it is an extraordinary display of arrogance.

Oh you can bet on it, and because you know it going in, you can promptly dismiss what you don’t believe.

Science can no more empirically disprove the existence of God than to prove him. Let them spew

It was a great series then and I think it’s still available on netflix streaming.

Sure, it’s expected, so dismiss it. Does it shake your faith? If not, let them spew.

As far as arrogance goes, this is nothing new for the “highly educated”, seen it so much that it doesn’t bother me.

Didn’t think of that, I’ll have to look. On a show thats so dated, its fun to compare the best theories then to what is now known as fact and then compared against the new cutting edge theories.

It doesn’t shake my faith.

I’m a hopeless cynic.

But, we live in a culture that can be intellectually lazy and easily influenced by peer pressure and ridicule.

If you watch session 2, you may get a sense of an agenda, a political agenda among “our leading scientists”.

The entire series is full of this.

It could just as easily be interpreted as Mormon, Christian or Scientologist. Which is the point.

To be fair, I don’t think Tyson is particularly bigoted, hateful, or a know nothing. He’s a smart man, and can communicate his ideas in a very accessible way.

He does come across as a bit arrogant, yes.

His biggest failing is that he sucks all the air out of the room when he is part of a panel. Just a blabbermouth. An entertaining one, but it does short-change everybody else on the panel. I’ve seen it several times.

But he’s usually the draw so promoters seem to let it slide. Just look at any panel discussion he is on and he runs out in front of everybody else, hitting his laugh lines, and entertaining the crowd.

I have a feeling he’s an engaging person, but one that just talks too much.

The over under is in show 5 he starts talking “global change caused by humans.”

I pick the under.

I am not looking forward to it. They will have the obligatory “we’re destroying the earth” message in each episode. I enjoy documentaries like that and I’ve watched some on Netflix. but geesh, every single one has to throw out global warming and guilt trip. One was particularly hilarious was a documentary on the sun showing how we know little about it and how it controls all aspects of life on earth BUT of course the most destructive force in the solar system is global warming caused by humans. Go figure.

And an atheist like Carl Sagan, although Tyson doesn't have the guts to come out of the closet.

My college astronomy professor was Carl Sagan and he rarely spoke of religion, although he worshiped quite frequently at the altar of young pu$$y. THAT was his primary goal, to be sure.

Way cool. Have to admit, he was an interesting man and certainly knew the subject matter.
I'll bet the class was educational and quite entertaining.

I know all this coming in and I dismiss it. they can darwin this and darwin that, big bang the universe and whatever else. Don’t mean a thing to me.

But I 100% agree with you on this:
“But, we live in a culture that can be intellectually lazy and easily influenced by peer pressure and ridicule.”

I call it our distracted, self centered culture.
