A US team in Egypt has identified the tomb of pharaoh Sobekhotep I, believed to be the founder of the 13th dynasty 3,800 years ago, the antiquities minister said.
The team from the University of Pennsylvania had discovered the quartzite sarcophagus of Sobekhotep I, which weighed about 60 tonnes, a year ago, but was unable to identify who it belonged to until last week, the ministry said.
Its identity was established after the team found fragments of a slab inscribed with the pharaoh's name and showed him sitting on a throne, Antiquities Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said in a statement.
"He is likely the first who ruled Egypt at the start of the 13th dynasty during the second intermediate period," the minister said.
The discovery is important as not much information was available about Sobekhotep I "who ruled Egypt for four years and a half, the longest rule at this time," said Ayman El-Damarani, a ministry official.
The tomb's discovery in the southern archaeological site of Abydos is expected to reveal more details about his life and rule, he added.
The team also discovered the remnants of canopic vases traditionally used to preserve internal body organs, along with gold objects owned by the king.

But did they find a Stargate?
[sigh] Mummy told me there’d be days like this.
Sobekhotep? He was an okay Pharoah. We had many a talk back in the days of his reign. He always kept wanting to build me a monument. I told him I didn’t need one but would play a song for him every now and then called “walk like an Egyptian”.
Hopefully another un-plundered tomblike Tut’s will be found some day.

Those ancient Egyptians were wise to set such short term limits for their rulers.
They didn’t; while working on this topic posting, I got thinking about Mentuhotep II, noticed when I looked something up about him that he ruled 51 years.
"He was born in Arizona .... got a condo made of stone-a ..."
Un-plundered Tombs were found in Tanis—one with a silver coffin but these were done in WW II and didn’t get the PR that Tut did! The findings of two Royal Tombs was bad luck for the French Team that found them because no one was interested! Sad Really because they were important finds.
I find it fascinating that these curses have so much power, even after thousands of years. The team that excavated King Tut’s tomb ended up dying under circumstances that can be easily described as attributed to a curse and then of course, the two that you mentioned. Makes me glad I have a superstitious side to me to prevent me from messing with stuff I have no business messing with.
The curses may well have been linked to science—The could have placed germs and toxins in the tombs—Egyptians knew a great deal about poisons and such—so there might be a logical side to the curses.
You’re quite right; chances are the Egyptians laced all of this with poison. When you throw in the brilliant science of the traps and mazes that the tombs consisted of, it explains all of it.
Yet, I still think black magic still lingers one way or another.
Try to keep up.
Doh! No wonder Colonel O’Neil and Tielk always roll their eyes at me when I ask this question.
Lord Carnarvon and the mosquito would probably agree with you. 'Course, if he had lived, we might not have "Downton Abbey" today ...
Remind me to thank King Tut for that.
This stuff always drives me crazy.
Look at how straight the inside walls are of this sarcophagus, and the sharp right angle cuts of the interior.
This is quartzite and was made using crude had tools nearly 4000 years ago? It’s like the pyramids at Giza.
Giza pyramids are so far superior to all other Egyptian pyramids - it is obvious that what we’re seeing was made with technology beyond what the ancient Egyptians of circa 4000 years ago possessed.
