7 Dog Breeds that Don't Deserve Their Stereotypes
Yahoo! Shine ^ | 1/10/14 | Carol Bryant

Have you ever been out in public, minding your own business, simply walking your dog, and people start moving to the other side of the street in fear? There are many dog breeds that don't deserve the bad rap society places upon them. Perhaps your dog is one of the breeds or mixed mutts that get a bad rap.

Dogs of certain breeds are not born dangerous by default. This, coupled with breed legislation, media focus on particular breeds, and the sensationalizing of certain incidents of attack have lead to an overall generalizing that ultimately hurts a dog, and may cost him his life.

-snip-

1. Pit Bull: Sadly, this breed has taken on more criticism and warnings than most other breeds in recent years. Often labeled as vicious, untrustworthy, and in possession of locking jaws, the Pit Bull tops our list as receiving a bad rap. According to the American Temperament Test Society, Pit Bulls ranked second in reliability overall. In other words: This original "nanny breed" is not the problem, but the way he is trained may be the issue.

That’s a whole lot of maimings and killings from only 4.4% of all dogs.

"Mrs. Liberty tells me of a Dane she once had that was convinced he was everybody’s lapdog. About 150-175 pounds of love."

He didn't know he was any bigger than a puppy, LOL.

The dog I mentioned was Schutzhund trained. He would go out every night and do a perimeter check, then come back in and stay awake for hours, keeping watch.

If you were a strange male, you needed to tread carefully, but not so much if you were a woman...maybe because he was trained by a woman? He was extremely protective of females.

I was visiting one day when a repairman came by. The GS sat down on my feet, facing the man, growling.

In the “killer dog list” Dobes are mentioned with the disclaimer that 99% of the killings were in defense of their owner.

Good dogs.

:)

By compiling U.S. and Canadian press accounts between 1982 and 2012,1 Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People, shows the breeds most responsible for serious injury and death.

Well, there's your problem.

That list is based on press accounts; i.e., the same people to whom every dog is a pit bull. GIGO.

(This does not change the fact that Dobies are good dogs.)

Well, there's your problem.

And what problem would that be -- that 65% of all dogs who have maimed and killed disguised themselves as Pit Bulls???

German Shepards are the best looking of all dogs,..to me anyhow. They’re movie-star handsome in fact.

Literally all the Rottweilers I’ve ever met have been teddy bears. The Pits I’ve met (far fewer) have also been sweeties. I guess it really is the owners.

Maybe it’s you, I think dogs cab sense a friend.

Due to the hip dysplasia common in large dogs, our danes used to prefer sitting on the couch (front paws on the floor), rather than going all the way down. My sister had parties where the guests would sit on either side of the dogs to eat and the dogs would nonchalantly examine their plates.

That’s my opinion, as well...they’re gorgeous dogs. I have a soft spot for Dobermans, Malamutes, and Huskies, too, as well as Rotts, and even the dreaded pit bull. But Shepherds are my favorite breed.

Oh my gosh, terrible story but I can see how it could happen. Thanks for sharing as it reminds me to not feel bad when my little guy looks at me in shock and horror when I have to shut a door in his face to keep him in until we are hooked up—and even then, I am not always successful! I don’t know why, but I’m sure I will be back at shelter looking for another old one one day. Best as we can figure, the two I have had (one has passed) both ended up in shelter because they followed their nose and got lost somehow.

The GS sat down on my feet, facing the man, growling.

That’s why I believe in having an inside dog to notify me something aint right.
As a Texan by choice, I’ve found many Texans believe dogs should stay outside but I’ll tell ya when I’m sleeping I never hear my outside dogs. Plus I think they speak a language they understand, it seems my inside dog only alerts us when another dog or person is around who doesn’t belong.

I thank God dogs were left here on earth for us. I’ve had at least 1 dog my entire life.
Let me tell you the best thing about dogs. When I was young I used to work like crazy 80 hrs minimum per week. I could be gone for days straight and when I’d get home the kids would walk by like I never left, the ex would be like (oh you’re back again) but my dog was always very happy to see me. It didn’t matter if you were gone a few days or a trip to the store, It’s always joyful when your dog/s are happy to see ya.

majority of dog attack on humans that either cause death or cause great damage are by pit bulls.

Not in Canada...any idea why that might be...?
