The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
This crazy Texas weather. It's 50 at my house right now..It should be colder here than there, shouldn't it?
I’d prefer lots of rain and a bit of snow, even some seasons worth noting. It would be terrific if my plants had to fight for life instead of having to chop them back before they overtake the house. However, sun will do.
When we lived in Leadville, CO - July, August, and winter - they told me at the nursery that they planted stuff in their bathtubs two months ahead of time. Didn’t mention any fancy lamps or set ups, although there perhaps were. I went to the nursery on July 1 to get some seedlings, but they told me it was way too late.
I am so easily influenced..Reading that, I thought, "ooh, nobody will be at Home Depot or Lowe's or Wally World this early,"
So, out the door, I went. At Home Depot, I bought jicama seeds, red onion sets, red seed potatos, asparagus (which I think goes into the ground in the fall here, not the spring)..
they must've seen me coming as most of these things were right where you go in the front entrance. Lowe's and Walmart didn't have anything except flower bulbs.
I thought jicama grew from slips..Didn't know it grew from seeds.
“Frigid Winter storm coming on Sunday.”
That is bad - guess the school will close again and you’ll have the granddaughter all day for while. You have family who have to get out in it so I hope they will be okay.
It’s sunny here, so it will be a beautiful day again here. Lowes opens at 7am and we were there about 7:05. They were dismantling the holiday stuff to make room for the seeds and stuff. We were in and out in time to catch the breakfast buffet next door and out of there in time to get an oil change at the garage, then on to Heb for food and meds and back here by 10. Whew, No more trips to town for a while, now to relax a bit before playing in the shop and looking for my grow bulbs and fixtures for starting seeds soon.
We are forecast for 25 on Sun night, and 22 on Mon night. But it will be sunny Mon and Tues so it wont seem too bad.
Being a prepper, that is an excellent idea and I hadn't thought of that. In a shtf situation, people would have seed of local growing plants, but not seeds that aren't sold there now.
“Gardening, Im finding, is just one experiment after another.”
That is exactly what it is. I'm in the middle of experiments since I haven't done this before.
“Santa brought me a new wagon!”
I know you got a fancy one but I read something not long ago about using a child's wagon to put containers in and that would allow one to move plants around easily. I have an old child's wagon and right now it's leaned against a brick wall so rainwater won't get in it. If I put a hole in the bottom of the wagon so water would drain, I could put plants in it so I could move them around. It is just there now not being used for anything.
My relative engineer will come this Monday and stay the week attending a conference. If I tell him to put a hole in that wagon it will get done so I think I'll do that.
“Ideally, the best container for potatoes is soft-sided, like a sack, with sides that can be rolled or folded down for the initial planting.”
That is exactly what I have.
“As the greens grow six inches tall, add more potting mix, repeat this process until either blooms occur, or green growth fades.”
Do you mean cover up the six inches of growth and do that every time it’s six inches tall?
We used to have a gardener on here that lived pretty high up in the Rockies near Longs summit somewhere. He climbed mountains world wide for fun, and grew a garden. I dont recall seeing him here last year or this year.
My wifes favorite garden center in Tomball has a fleet of about 50 or more Radio Flyer wagons for customers to use as shopping carts.
Add about 4 inches of potting mix to six inch tall greens. This leaves a couple of inches of green exposed to sunlight. Unfold the soft-sided container as needed to accommodate the new potting medium, while allowing sunlight to reach the new growth.
It’s 10:45 am and 54.6 outside.
You are really changing things there. No wonder you are tired in the evening and going to bed early.
“to catch the breakfast buffet next door”
What breakfast buffet?
“Add about 4 inches of potting mix to six inch tall greens. This leaves a couple of inches of green exposed to sunlight.”
Thanks for telling me that as I didn’t know what to do.
Hey, Marcella,
look over here. Lots of pretty pictures..I was looking for this since I bought seed potatoes that I wasn’t really intending to buy this morning..
I’ve grown them in dirt before, but never in bags.

OOh, here’s a guy who sews his own potato bags out of landscape fabric..I bet plankets, which I have tons of would work, too.

As you can tell, I am hiding in the internet to avoid getting out the chainsaw, and cutting down some evil giant ligustrums, which, because I haven’t cut them back for three years are now horrible trees.

“look over here. Lots of pretty pictures”
That is a British website, can’t order from them.
I researched every potato bag on the web and they all fail except for the ones below and they are the cheapest I found. Three bags for $12.00. The large tall bag for potatoes is: “The deep planter is 1’ 6” tall and 1’ 2” in diameter.” I bought two sets of these bags and I think greeneyes bought a set.

I didn't even read the "ordering" part. I was just looking at how they plant them.
I have a commercial sewing machine, so, could easily sew some..heck, it even sews shoe leather, tent canvas..It's a nice thing to have. I also have my Granny's old treadle sewing machine, but it doesn't do heavy duty stuff.
