Windscreen wipers to be consigned to history?
Sunday Telegraph (UK) ^ | 11:57AM GMT 15 Dec 2013 | Tom Whitehead

It smears flies across your view and freezes up in winter, but now the humble windscreen wiper is destined for history.

Supercar designers McLaren are working on secret plans to replace the rubber wiper with a hi-tech ultrasound device that stops anything sticking to the windscreen. It would mean wiper arms heading down the same road as wind-up windows and ashtrays as they vanish from cars.

Adapted from a similar system used on fighter jets, the proposed design is understood to center on high-frequency sound waves that effectively create a force field across the windscreen preventing water, insects and mud from resting on the glass. …

“Do you still tutor to support your lifestyle there?”

No, I am retired, living on my social security.
Trying to tutor here would be nothing like doing it in central Europe, where it is really deluxe and fun work.

“What do you miss the most from the US?
What do you miss the least?”
__________________________________________________
I would have to give that a lot of thought.
All I can say now is that I would be in total misery if back in the Obamination of the USSA, not to mention that I would be in poverty, unless I still had a business, making a lot of money.
From what I understand, a small family needs $50,000 per year just to get by. Is that true?

I was having satellite problems with snow and ice sticking to the satellite and no signal to the house. He told me to spray pam on the satellite and by golly, it worked. Ice/snow wouldn't stick to the satellite. Wonder if it would work on wind shields in snow/ice storms.

Good tip to do BEFORE there is snow on the roof.

I like wind-up windows. They seem to work better than power windows when the ignition is off, or maybe that’s just me.

A couple years ago, I picked my little sister up from school (1st grade or so). Since the other little brother had practice or something after school, she got lucky and was able to nab the front seat. After asking if she could roll her window down, I told her to use the handle to do so. Her response: "You have to do it yourself? That's so cool!"

“As early as 2000, the media said the car companies were claiming it was to cut costs. Government involvement (depending on the country) seems to be centered around cutting down on “distracted driving”. “

That’s rich in irony considering all the electronic gadget options available.

My 65 VW bug had a hand crank sun roof.

I learned to drive in a WWII surplus Jeep (made by Ford). It had a hand-crank auxiliary starter!

That was a nice looking car, but it did look an awful lot like a Ford Thunderbird from that same era.

That crap is hydrophilic. It sucks water out of the air and sticks it to the windshield. Makes it impossible to see out of your windshield where the humidity is high.

I just put layers of Saran Wrap on my windshield and tear them off as they get too dirty or wet. Sat in the car once in the winter too long and got freezer burn.

There wad a good reason for that. Elwood Engel was chief of vehicle styling for Ford when the Thunderbird to which you’re referring was designed, and then he went over to Chrysler, where he was responsible for the Turbine concept. Look at certain early to mid sixties Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles, then look at comparable Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler vehicles of a year or two later. The clean, sort of slab-sided design of both manufacturers with blade fenders was due to Engel, it was something of a trademark, as was the rocket or jet inspiration of certain T-Birds, the Turbine, etc. I like the look of his work for the most part, it’s aged well.

“A force field across the windscreen”
How about a cloaking device? Can you order a cloaking device, too? Oh, those Romulans wouldn’t be trying to transport me up to their ship again if I had a cloaking device and some shields.
