I am sorry for your loss. They are as much family as those with 2 legs.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Oh, no! Sorry to hear this. My guess is that he was blessed to have you as an owner, and your heart should be warmed by the love you gave him. I’m sure he returned it in spades.

Toespi, I don't know if this helps or not, but, I wrote of all my experiences surrounding the loss of my precious Cathy.

I can empathize with your pain, and I pray for your healing and comfort.

I can offer this, as well, besides the piece I wrote: Writing about it helps, a lot.... and keep your eyes and ears open for what God will say to you. He will speak and He has something to say.

I;m a tough old buzzard, but I’m in tears right now. Lost my kitty Xiao Hu two months ago, and haven’t recovered. It’s the lost of a close friend. I’m so sorry for your loss!

I’m sorry to hear of your lose. I’m certain you and your family can take some needed comfort that Maxwell almost certainly lived an ideal dog’s life with your family.

I know the pain. When we lost our Golden Retriever last year I told my wife that I finally knew what having a heartache meant.
May God ease your pain.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is always the worst day in our lives, when we lose a beloved pet. I still mourn their loss, after years after.
I know this is not always popular to say, but I think going out and adopting a rescue dog, helps you to recover.

My condolences . . . it’s something I’ve been through too many times. Just remember that God loves him even more than you do.

Oh, that’s tough, man/woman. Been there twice in 5 years with two furry friends over 15. It feels like a punch to gut. I still miss them almost daily. Hell I think about my dog I lost in 2000. The happy news is they stay with you; the sad news is they stay with you.

The vet sent me a sympathy card with this quote in it after I had to have my 29 year old horse put down (I'd had her for 20 years) .....

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.

My sympathies on your loss.

When my nephew was about age 3, he got a dachshund pup that was just a few weeks old.

They grew up together.

The dachshund aged and died at about 14. My nephew and the rest of the family were heartbroken. That dachshund was a member of the family.

My condolences on your loss.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I know what it is like, I lost a cat both in 2011 (G.W) and 2012 (Whitey). They were the kittens to my cat Spunky, who had a third kitten, Greystone, we lost in 2006. Out of the family, we only have the mother left, Spunky, but she has an adopted son, Rascal, we got in 2007. Still they are hard to lose and harder to let go, but remember, they still love you and any other pets you get, you love the old ones through them. One day, you will see them again, read the poem, “The Rainbow Bridge.”

we have two weiners and take in rescues all the time.
my wife usually finds a home for them in a few months.
Take care of a rescue weiner to bridge the loss.
they are so funny and loyal.
