The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
There is absolutely no proof of that whatsoever. None. Besides, part of that would be covered by the statute of limitations. I'm as innocent and pure as the driven snow. Really. No, seriously.

I have seen photos of the Statue of Limitations and it doesn’t hold a candle to the Statue of Liberty!!!
“...pure as the driven snow. No, seriously.”
I don’t think you are as “pure as the driven snow” about anything. No, seriously.

“At least I’ve never been caught.”
You are very smart which makes you dangerous and lovable at the same time. If I was in trouble, I’d want you on my side.
Part of it was extenuating circumstances. I've been getting home from work just as the sun was starting to set, which makes colors look weird sometimes. And add to that the fact that something died in our woodpile, smells like a raccoon. The whole back yard reeks to high heaven. I've pretty much been dashing out there after work, picking what looks ready, and running back in to escape the smell.
So, the fact that my cucumber plant was turning white kind of got brushed to the side. Until today.
Today there was no escaping it, I have powdery mildew. The entire plant is covered in it, although it seems to be growing fine in spite of that. I found a recipe for treating it that involves milk and baking soda, and after picking as many cucumbers as I could find, I doused both that vine and all the nearby plants with the mixture. We'll see what happens.
There were 8 cucumbers ripe enough for seed, so I chopped them up and have the pulp soaking in Oxyclean. The flesh wasn't sweet anymore, but it wasn't bitter either, so I diced that up and stuck it in the fridge. When I have time tomorrow I'll get some bell peppers and a bag of onions and make pickle relish. Mom loves my pickle relish.
You either cage your trees, or shoot the deer. They are voracious, and they are pests.
SM - Have you ever been to Mac-n-Ernies in Tarpley? They have the best axis and blue cheese burgers in the state!
Several. One is made of ceramic, another of olive wood, and a third is glass. We generally use them to to grind small amounts of dry, coarse items.
Is that the little place on the side of the road that's just open part of the week, and the seating is outside at picnic tables?
I saw a place, IIRC, at Tarpley on Drive-ins, Diners, and Dives that I always wanted to go check out. Is that it?
I have a brass one I bought in Morocco a hundred years ago. I use it to grind saffron threads.
JRandom might know the actual proper name for the wooden ravioli making thingie..It's shaped kinda like a pestle.
You can dry them in a pillowcase in the clothes dryer.. just kidding..
I think some people do it in their pilot light oven, their dehydrator, or if it's hotter than heck, set them in the inside ledge behind the back seat of their car.
I have a giant herb drying rack above my kitchen table..They were popular in the 70's. It has wire hooks over the wooden cross pieces and you can rubber band or twist tie the bunches of herbs, and hang them (upside down) on the hooks..
Heck, you could even clothespin those bunches of herbs to a clothes hanger if you wanted and hang it in a warm, dry spot...
So, I can dry the herbs in the dehydrator which I don’t have yet. Drying outside here is pretty much out since it’s humid here most of the time.
While looking for something else a while ago, I found two booklets that I got for husband about three years ago, they are “Container Gardening” and “Starting Seeds Indoors”. I had forgotten about these booklets since I didn’t read them. In the back of the container gardening one, there is a list of herbs and where they like best to grow and how to take care of them. That takes care of learning about herbs.
I’ll read the starting seeds one to see if there is something else I need to know besides what I’m already doing to germinate seeds under the grow light I have. It covers the transplanting into the garden which for me is transplanting into containers.
Yes, that will work fine, but in the meantime, you could also dry them other ways...if you have a forty or sixty watt Incandescent light bulb..
BTW, my Mother in law used to bake cookies in the car on really hot days..set the the trays in the back ledge under the car window..she thought it was great fun. She also dried fruit that way..Her solar oven car/dehydrator.
Good thinking Marcella. Bet that would be a delightful book too. Might even get it published and get rich.LOL
Well we are also confused, so join the club.LOL Same thing happened to my daughter. She bought almond trees and they had almonds the first year, and have had fruit like peaches ever since.
Terrific news that you are making such good progress.
Uh Oh, gonna have to plant lots of extra for that doe and baby. I thank the lord that I don’t have to worry about deer in my gardens.
