I retired 10 years ago to take of elderly parents. Dad died peacefully last year and Mom is still kicking.
After spending the afternoon in the eye doc's office with Mom, came home and, after settling her down, went for the mail.
New neighbor has a Pit-Bull and today this dog was loose. As I went to the mail box, the dog ran over to the middle of the street (perhaps 15 feet away) and bared his teeth.
His owners were in the yard but did not call the dog. At the same time a UPS truck stop in front of their house, but the driver refused to get out of his truck.
Question is "what steps do I take as a good citizen?"
The next door neighbors inherited the house from the girl's grandmother. The girl's husband is a born again Christian...but he was previously in prison for drugs.
Pit Bull is young but large and aggressive.
Freeper opinions appreciated.
BTW, I have cats who lounge around in the front yard. If this dog kills my cats...I am apt to become upset. And an upset Freeper (armed to the teeth) is not a nice thing to behold.

.
Do you know the difference between fear, curiousity, and agression?
And lots of big tough dogs love to play with cats.
Agree...your reply to that absurd suggestion was hilarious.
Getting down to "face level" with a pit that's growling and showing teeth is NOT smart. Even if you're Cesar Millan.
Do the documentation thing as posted above then open carry while on your property. Make sure the neighbor sees you while armed. He may be smart enough to put two plus two together and leash his animal.
That's NOT my doog!!
Phooey! I hate typos. I would NOT go down onto my knee.
Damn! - Don’t tell me you’re that dumb too.
Call the police when the dog is out—they will shoot it!!
No, that would be you...obviously ;)
Did ya talk to the neighbor ? Try the easy way first. Even if ya have to drive over to their home and speak to em from the vehicle to avoid getting chewed on by fido..... Escalate accordingly with local animal control etc till ya get the desired level of safety ......or fido gets DRT aka dead right there....trying to bite you..
Stay safe !

I wished Free Republic would ban threads about Pit Bulls. The idiocy of most posters is embarrassing.
And I wish Free Republic would ban threads BY snake handlers.
The fearful people never get to live; they get to cower and soil their depends till they get moved to Shady Pines.
And some of those dog shooters probably live near you.
LOL! Best answer!
Try calling the cops first. In some jurisdictions in or around cities, they respond very well. Pit bulls are simply plugged and planted if seen in my area (middle of nowhere), but there is not here.
I know there are good pit bulls. I would not trust any aggressive dog if it could cause harm to me or mine. Do pits make me nervous? Yes, guess I profile. But, I have known some nice ones. I got bit by a border collie a couple of years ago. Totally my fault. I would not punish that dog for my mistake. This dog is behaving aggressively and not being controlled. Pit or poodle, it is a bad situation. It happens to be a fact that a pit is more likely to cause more damage more quickly.
ANY breed of dog that runs in the middle of the street and shows its teeth is scary, especially a pit bull. Any dog should not be running out of their yard, that’s irresponsible dog ownership. Owners of a pit bull that don’t follow that are especially bad dog owners, knowing the stigma with the breed. If they let it happen once, they’ll let it happen again, but next time it might not stop in the middle of the street.
Personally I wouldn’t bother talking to the dog owners, they’ve already shown their irresponsibility and ignorance, doubt they’ll listen. Callvthe proper authorities. Make sure you carry your gun with you next time to get the mail. Stay safe!
Now, kindly back off.
