LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) A 63-year-old man was set on fire while sitting in his SUV outside of a convenience store in Long Beach Friday night.
The incident, which was captured on cellphone video, happened just after 5 p.m. in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven near the intersection of Clark Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway.
Police said the victim was in his Toyota 4-Runner with the windows open when a man walked up and threw flammable liquid inside the vehicle.
Witness Robert Linkroum was in the store when he saw the entire situation unfold.
A man had something in his hand, quickly throws whatever he has in his hand into the open window and the SUVs interior immediately burst into flames, he said.
A Good Samaritan helped the driver to safety. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition with burns over most of his body.
The 39-year-old suspect was arrested a block away and is in the process of being booked on attempted murder charges. Neighbors said hes a known transient who frequently hangs out in front of the 7-Eleven.
Hes always here talking to himself, said Shannon Flynn. I would never expect for him to snap like that.
Some residents said they heard an argument between the suspect and the victim before the explosion, but police said they didnt know each other.
Theres no information that they had a relationship and there was no incident prior to this crime, so right now it looks like a random act, said Sgt. Aaron Eaton of the Long Beach Police Department.
Why is the SUV mentioned?

Imagine the headline “Man, 63, Set On Fire Inside His Eco friendly Hybrid Outside 7-Eleven In Long Beach”
Dangerous, dangerous vehicles.
They are known to just suddenly snap. And wihtout even talking to themselves first.
People who drive a Prius wouldn’t be so evil as to tell the bum “no” when the bum demanded that their wealth be shared.
In my opinion the suspect, if convicted, deserves the same sentence he administered to the victim.
Obviously it was an accessory to the crime.
I set out for LA one time from SD.
I made it as far as Long Beach, and I turned around.
There int nothin I need to see up there.
What a pit.
7-Eleven’s and convenience stores near intersections MUST BE BANNED!

I went to the Smokies, looked west and decided much the same.

Ya, there's no murderers, whack jobs or dings in where you live.
Moronic statements by the pallet load..
These violent crimes must stop! All guns need to be banned!
This is a parable. I hope we learn from it.
Holey immoley, that is a decent part of town!
Scary because my kid has a friend who lives near there and he could have been stopped at that 711.
If the interior burst into flames, he must have been smoking. The perp either (A) hates smokers or (B) smokes, does not have a cigarette of his own and is jealous to the point of murder.
But I could be wrong!
The mentally ill are not “free spirits”,”harmless loners”,nor just people living an “alternative lifestyle”.
There is a huge difference between someone with a mild cleanliness OCD, and a violent paranoid schizophrenic.
Can drugs help the schizophrenic?
Yes, often.
Can they freely live in society without constantly endangering themselves and others?
No, never without heavy supervision.
So what do we do with the dangerously mentally ill? Closing the insane asylums hasn’t worked....
Coming from S.D, You would have had to pass thru Los Angeles to get to Long Beach. What were you looking for, a sailor? I call B.S.
