Most Over Rated Musician

Posted on 04/05/2013 7:20:30 PM PDT by MNDude

There are a lot of lousy musicians that are a lot more popular than they deserve, but in you opinion, who are the three most over rated musicians (or groups) of all time?

Whitney, something or other (not Museum, that’s for sure), I forget, thankfully, gone now!

Should have bought their first LP on Capitol records- it’s worth over eight grand now.

Springsteen obviously. Any c-rapper. Rod Stewart.

Bob Dylan, Gloria Estefan, that screamer Kroger, cant recall his band, you know who I’m talking about. Hell most pop bands or solo acts are overrated because they appeal to the masses, and you know what they say about them. Much of my favorite musical choices not many here have heard of, or likely would enjoy. Think: fiddles and washboards and you get some inkling...after all im from the South and therefore simple, humble.

"Zeppelin? You’re kidding, right?"

Well, I thought of ranking them #1 most over rated, but still feel the Beatles deserve the honor.

Madonna
The Rolling Stones
Bruce Springsteen

Three for three. I won't argue with any of your choices.

I just have one question: Am I the only person who thinks Madonna's singing voice resembles a kazoo?

I started with this top 100 listing as a reference (it was just the first one I found where it was an actual 1-page list, not 100 pages to click through):

http://stereogum.com/495331/vh1-100-greatest-artists-of-all-time/list/

My top 3 overrated were:
1. Nirvana (#14??? They had one decent song)
2. Bob Dylan (The man never could sing at all)
3. Jimi Hendrix (He could do amazing things with a guitar, but one thing he couldn’t do with it was make good music.)

Dishonorable mention: Janis Joplin at 72. (At least 1000 places too high; just horrible.)

I assume Velvet Underground at 24 was just a joke to see if anyone was paying attention.

I’ll give one......Bob Dylan. I’m nearly 46 and I never even heard of him until I was about 33 or so.

Most overrated on the planet. Beats Springsteen, hands down.

Sinatra doesn't sound flat or harsh on Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!. Since the instrumentalists were on strike at the time, no instruments are used--he had only the Bobby Tucker Singers to back him up. Nonetheless, it was a smash hit in the fall of 1943, and it's one of my favorite songs from that year.

Well, we are talking personal tastes so perhaps no wrong answer BUT Bob Seger has gifts from a lustrous musical soul. That cannot be rated too highly given its scarcity. In my humble opinion, of course.
