Most Over Rated Musician

Posted on 04/05/2013 7:20:30 PM PDT by MNDude

There are a lot of lousy musicians that are a lot more popular than they deserve, but in you opinion, who are the three most over rated musicians (or groups) of all time?

"In fifth grade, I knew more about music than you donow(sic)"

And how old were you then? 19?

"You should Google a bit, and you will discover just how many actual musicians claim Zep as a formative influence."

Thalidomide was also a formative influence on many people.

Pretty much any “performer” during Super Bowl halftime the last 20 years (maybe a couple of exceptions)
And any big hair “glam” bands of the 80’s and 90’s

Springsteen ranks high as overrated. A more bands such as Radiohead and Green Day are WAY overrated.

A few words that have most likely NEVER escaped Bob Dylan’s lips in 50+ years of recording: “Whoa, that sucked! Take Two!”

I suspect as zonked out as Page and Bonham would get, if it wasn’t for JPJ some of those Zep albums might never have been made. He was always the consummate professional.

So, you understand math as poorly as you do music. I've already told you: I wasn't eighteen in fifth grade. If I was 19, I would have been (in both common usage and mathematical inclusion) 18.

Pro tip: when the guy in the bar asks if you're 21, he doesn't mean, are you just twenty-one this evening.

Derp.

Good Guitar players know good musicians and Clapton is one of the best. But not because of originality or his writing skills. Clapton is revered for his phrasing.

There is a reason he is called "Slow Hand" he does more with the notes he doesn't play than many of these thrasher Guitar God wanna-bees do with their endless repetitive arpeggios.

Well, your insecurities are very obvious. Your band has been slighted and you've lashed out in their defense.

It must be a miserable existence, but I would simply leave with you with the thought that if defending the reputation of a rock group is so critical to you, perhaps they really are just a bit...

...over rated.

Nailed it. Phrasing is sort of a subtle thing but Clapton has got the knack, big time. When he's on, he is so tasteful it's not even funny. He says just what needs to be said at just the right time in just the right way. Even his fills are always these perfect little hooks.

I loved that performance. I got it in Hi Def.

Joining this thread late. My three overrated bands would be Yes, Green Day and Sting. I’m talking major recording artists, although there are many other lesser acts that are overrated.

Yes.

There is an episode of MASH the TV series wherein Charles is conversing about being a musician. He said something like: "I can play the notes, but I can't make the music." that is what phrasing and expression is, "Making the Music" This is what Clapton excels at.

That is exactly right. Phrasing is what separates the men from the boys musically speaking. All the greats have genius phrasing — Albert King, Albert Collins, Freddie King. Same way with the rock guys — Jimmy Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Slash. All had something to say and could say it just right. Hard to wrap words around it because it’s such a taste thing, but the greats have got it. Clapton is among the finest of the fine in his sense of phrasing.

In the mid 80s I had an audio spectrum analyzer. I put Sinatra’s voice on it as opposed to his band. He sang off-key.....all the time on song after song.

I had the recordings and graphic printouts for all of the world to see. Then, I had a house fire. The fire destroyed all of the ‘evidence’.

PERFECT example!

Roger Waters nailed the concept verbally in a Documentary when he was explaining how he would tell a musician he was producing in the studio to "Play half a bar and let it linger."

Never heard a better explanation. "Let it linger"
