Scientists revive the genome of an extinct Australian frog

A frog extinct for the last 30 years may be brought back to life.

In a scientific breakthrough that has opened frontiers to saving species in catastrophic decline from becoming extinct, the genome of an extinct Australian frog has been revived and reactivated by a team of scientists using sophisticated cloning technology to implant a “dead” cell nucleus into an egg from another frog species.

The bizarre gastric-brooding frog Rheobatrachus silus—which swallowed its eggs, brooding its young in its stomach and gave birth through its mouth—became extinct in 1983.

The “Lazarus Project” team has been able to recover cell nuclei from tissues collected in the 1970s and kept for 40 years in a conventional deep freezer.

The “de-extinction” project aims to bring the frog back to life. …

As long as they didn't clone the Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka.

Came across similar article last week. Many extinct animals are on the menu for possible de-extinction; woolly mammoth, passenger pigeon, ivory billed woodpecker, dodo, sabertooth cat, many more..hopefully some dinosaurs are in the mix.

The cane toad ain’t going anywhere. That’s an invasive species, too; originally from South America.

I watched the TED talk on de-extinction. Sequence the genome. Find the closest relatives. If possible, use their cells and turn into stem cells, modify into the stem cells of the extinct species, turn into germ cells. Put germ cells in the animals to make little extinct animals and brood them. In the case of the lecture, chickens and roosters would have the engineered germ cells for passenger pigeons and other fowl. They lay eggs and hatch them. Then give to the nearest relative in terms of behavior to train them to feed and flock. Now the species is “de-extinct”.

It was funny watching an environmentalist Earth worshiper say this was bad because it was interfering with nature. The scientist retorted that we’ve already interfered with nature by rendering these species extinct, and we’re actually undoing the damage by bringing back these keystone species.

IE, the de-extinction isn’t against nature but what environmentalists should support to restore it.

Thanks Olog-hai.

Glad they could find the dioxy ribbet nucleic acid.

Just adding to the catalog, not sending a general distribution.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.

This is BLASPHEMY!

Holy Darin spake of The Natural Order.

Holy Darwin spake of Natural Selection.

Holy Darwin spake of the Survival Of The Fittest.

These HERETICS would abrogate Natural Order, restoring that which Natural Selection selected out of Existence, artificially forcing the survival of the execrable unfit onto the world of the Chosen Fit!

I, Great Grand Beagle of the Galapagos, by the Powers vested from the Most High And Holy Carolingian Priesthood of Darwinian Evolution, proclaim these Blasphemers and Heretics Unfit for Survival, and so to be sentenced to Genetic Oblivion, by way of public near-hanging, drawing and quartering, followed by impaling upon the Most Holy Double Helix Rod of Justice, by which they may then be dipped into a vat of boiling oil, then set upright and set ablaze in the Fire of Chromosomal Purification: themselves, and any and all progeny thereof descended.

Only thus may Order be restored, Faith protected, and Abomination destroyed from our pure Evolved Civilized midst!

So let it be written; so let it be done!

Wonder if they will try this next with the thylacine. (Unless of course it’s not actually extinct.)

The last one known for sure died in the 1930s, in captivity, but there have been intermittent reports ever since, including one in the 1980s (if memory serves) where a thylacine walked right into to a man’s camp, at night, and was fully illuminated by the campfire.
