As for my least favorites, I cannot listen to Paul McCartney’s “Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time” without puking in my mouth.

Hark the herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled”
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem”
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ by highest heav’n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris’n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

The trouble with modern, bubblegum Christmas music is both that it is not spiritually satisfying, and all too soon becomes cloying.

Instead, give your ears and spirit some depth with the enormous amount of classical Christmas music. Go for Baroque. Bach and his sons is a great place to start, as much of their music was written for church performance, so it doesn’t overwhelm.

Truthfully, you could listen to such music the entire Christmas season and not hear the same music for an entire decade.

Thanks - good stuff! I often think that Advent gets lost in the shuffle leading up to Christmas. I enjoy the quiet time of reflection...

This collection of Christmas songs from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries includes a favorite of mine, "Christians Awake" as well as "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen," "The First Noel," and "Silent Night."

Another good Advent hymn is "Watchman, Tell Us of the Night", with words by John Bowring and music by Lowell Mason. Mason was a prominent antebellum writer of sacred music whose works include "Joy to the World" and "Nearer, My God, to The."

I just love this version of “We Three Kings” and want to put it someplace on FR. This has been one of my favorite carols since forever.

Let all mortal flesh keep silence
.
1. Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
and with fear and trembling stand;
ponder nothing earthly-minded,
for with blessing in his hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth,
our full homage to demand.
.
2. King of kings, yet born of Mary,
as of old on earth he stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture,
in the body and the blood;
he will give to all the faithful
his own self for heavenly food.
.
3. Rank on rank the host of heaven
spreads its vanguard on the way,
as the Light of light descendeth
from the realms of endless day,
that the powers of hell may vanish
as the darkness clears away.
.
4. At his feet the six-winged seraph,
cherubim, with sleepless eye,
veil their faces to the presence,
as with ceaseless voice they cry:
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Alleluia, Lord Most High!
.
