My favorite Christmas song is, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” the words of which were written by Henry W. Longfellow in 1864. However, the song doesn’t work unless it’s sung to the melody written by John B. Calkin in 1872—the newer melodies to which it is often heard are downright insipid. And it doesn’t work unless all seven verses are sung—verses four and five are almost never sung these days.
The song takes one through a range of emotions—joy upon first hearing the bells, which abruptly changes to despair and sadness at the outbreak of the War Between the States. Upon once again hearing the bells, the singer is filled with joy and realizes that God is still in charge, and that his will is going to prevail.
I HEARD THE BELLS ON CHRISTMAS DAY
I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along thunbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
Till ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound the carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn, the households born
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
And in despair I bowed my head
“There is no peace on earth,” I said,
“For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men.”
Oh, Come, all ye faithful.
Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful
By: John F. Wade
Oh, come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant!
Oh, come ye, oh, come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him
Born the king of angels:
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.
Highest, most holy,
Light of light eternal,
Born of a virgin,
A mortal he comes;
Son of the Father
Now in flesh appearing!
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.
Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God
In the highest:
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.
Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be glory given!
Word of the Father,
Now in flesh appearing!
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

We'll be singing all of these, plus others, at our services during the Christmas season (Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 30).
From now through Dec. 23, though, it will be Advent hymns.
“From now through Dec. 23, though, it will be Advent hymns.”
Excellent! Can you recommend some good ones? I’m aware of “O Come O Come Emmanuel” and “People Look East” but woefully ignorant on others...
I’m boycotting Christmas Songs.
For now.
There is one radio station in San Antonio that goes all Christmas songs 24/7 each year. This year they began before Thanksgiving.
OK fine. But their playlist is the same 30 dang songs. And most of the artists are what I call “Wailers”
If I hear Mariah Carey scream through “All I want for Christmas is you”; I will certainly go ape (bleep).
Yes I will.
(Sorry for the pessimistic rant)
Merry Christmas.
For me, it’s
“Good Christian, fear/For sinners here/The silent Word is pleading.” (What Child is This?)
and
“A thrill of hope/The weary world rejoices/For yonder breaks/A new and glorious morn.” (O Holy Night)
:))
John Rutter has written some awesome Christmas music.
Candlelight Carol is my all time favorite.
