One simple question and I know nothing of your motivations -
When “they” rule America, will they not also rule Costa Rica?

I figure it will take them a several years to get around to worrying about costa rica. Wonder if my retirement nest egg goes a lot further there?

Pretty much socialist. I would recommend Chile.

There are some very nice areas. I’ve read you only need about $2k a month to live comfortably there.

I have a friend living down there part time.
She and her husband have an escape route planned because when TSHTF they don’t want to be foreign gringos among angry locals.

My very active octogenarian parents liked it when they visited, and considered moving there, but now they're considering Uruguay.
I'm hoping to link up with Michael Strong's Free City project.

Good choice. Lots of former Mid-Westerners live there now. Lots of vegetables, clean roadsides, and high school attendance.
Costa Rica and Belize are worth your while looking into.
As Obamanation Communism continues its cancerous spread throughout the former United States of America, there will an increase in ex-patriots to Central America.

If you have actually made it far enough to retire, then you should just go while you can and spare us the histrionics.
The real challenge for most people is to get where you are in our current climate. Begone and don’t look back, but also don’t bitch about the fact that you actually get to retire.

Wow.... at 2K a month I could live a LONG LONG time there. I read somewhere the life expectancy is 79 there.

My Sister and BIL decided to retire to Costa Rica. They are seasoned world travelers and by no means gullible.
Despite that, they got conned out of $10,000 by some real estate agent there. They hired a lawyer but never got anything back.
Just be careful
