For the 22, a Marlin 60 with a good scope...can’t beat it.

You need to be more realistic about your budget and remember that you get what you pay for.

“.22 tube feed”? Why?

You should get a 10/22, the best that ever was.

Marlin 60 or Win 190. Booth are great tube fed .22LR guns. $200.

Used Remington 7400 in 30.06. Outstanding big game gun. Plenty accurate enough for man-deer sized animal out to 400y. $400 used.

Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870. Both are great shotguns, both come as hunters or protection gun, just decide wear you want the safety and pick that one. (Mossberg is on top of the grip, great for lefties) $250-$300 used

FReepers are gonna need to know if that budget is combined, or for each.

I wouldn’t know personally ‘cuz I live in The People’s Democratic Republic of Bloomberg.

Unless you're absolutely set on a tube mag for the .22, you'd be better off with a Ruger 10/22, IMHO. There are just too after market accessories to be had, and you can customize it in a virtually infinite number of ways to suit you.

Many would consider a .30-06 on the low end for elk/moose sized game (although they have been and continue to be taken with smaller calibers). If you want something capable of handling something larger than .30-06, I have two recommendations:

Not to be confused with the M1918 military rifle, the Browning BAR comes in a number of configurations: http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/finder.asp?f1=002B&bg=x

It can be had in chamberings for such rounds as .300 Win Mag, .300 WSM, .325 WSM and .338 Win Mag.

The Benelli R1 is also a solid autoloader that can be had in .30-06, .300 Win Mag and .338 Win Mag.

Forget the tube feed. Get a Ruger 10-22. It’s one of America’s great rifles. Period.

It’ll blow your budget to hell, but if you want a semi-auto game rifle, the Browning BAR.

Shotgun: Mossberg 500.

Many years ago “Soldier of Fortune” had some tactical shooting contest with shotguns. Nearly every contestant had the 870. That was all that I needed to know.

To keep it within budget, we’ll have to be creative here. I would start your search at gun shows where better deals can be found.

If I were choosing based on this list, (prices are guesstimates of what you can find at a gun show based on what they are going for on gun broker, much higher new/retail pricing)I would go with:

Ruger 10/22 (around $200)
Savage Model 110 (around $500)
Winchester Model 50 (around $250)

Again, these are guesses based on used, gun show price.

For the .22, I’d go with a Ruger ‘10/22’. Why go tube feed in a semi-auto when you can get one with a detachable magazine?(LOTS of parts/accessory options with the 10/22 as well)

As for the shotgun, you can’t go wrong with a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500.

Your total budget is a bit light for the task, but you might be able to do it if you go to a gun show to buy. Also, you might want to try to buy good used guns rather than new.

The Marlin mentioned before is a good choice, you can probably pick up one used for under $100.

The Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump gun is a great starting shotgun. Any length barrel with no tighter than a modified choke will work for slug and shot. If you want a rifled slug barrel, they come extra for under $200.

I like the Remington 700 bolt action in 30-06 for deer and/or elk. For moose, I'd want a larger caliber.

Like I said, go to gun shows, or ask around if any friends or relatives have anything that would fill the bill that they'd sell. Otherwise, you'll need to increase your budget.

Good luck. Unless you need to buy these all right now, take your time and buy them when you find them. That way, you may have a few extra bucks to work with too.

For the .22 I recommend the Ruger 10/22. No, it's not tube fed but has more after market accessories than you can ever imagine. Reliability and accuracy are both excellent. You can usually find it on sale for under $200.

For the shotgun the Remington 870 is an excellent choice. More accessories and interchangeable barrels than you will ever need. Plus the receiver is still made of steel so it can take quite a bit of abuse. Reliability excellent. Price is typically just under $250 on sale.

I don't have a specific recommendation for the center fire rifle since I've always used bolt guns for big game hunting. (Older Winchester model 70 & Remington 700)

1. Ruger 10/22 ~$250
2. Ruger American 30-06 (Bolt action not auto) ~$350
3. Maverick (made by Mossberg, cheaper than the 500) ~$200

You’ll even have a little money left over for some ammo!

You can get the Marlin model 60 .22 and a rifled Remington 870 shotgun for about $550. That leaves you only $450 for the semi-auto deer/elk rifle. The only one that is close is the Remington 740-7400 series, and they are not military grade. What I am hearing about them is that they simply do not hold up to hard use.

If you are willing to go with a pump deer/elk rifle, then the Remington 760-7600 has a good reputation and are readily available.

The added advantage of the 760 is that the controls are nearly the same as the Remington 870 pump shotgun.

If you wanted to make your entire arsenel have the same controls, you could get the Remington 572 pump .22, which is a wonderful rifle. You can find them used for $200. I am not sure that they are still available new, but the last price I saw for a new one was $532.

The Browning BAR has a good reputation, but cost your entire budget for one.

For .22, either the Marlin 60 (~$160.) or Ruger 10/22 (~$200.)is a good choice. Marlin also has the 795 (~145.), which is equivalent to the 60 but had a detachable magazine instead of the tube. You might find a used Model 60 for $100.

A used Browing BAR is probably $600-$800. (and up). Savage has a huge number of bolt-action models that are reasonably priced and generally accurate. A few years ago I sold a new-in-box Browning A-bolt Hunter 30-06 for $650. with Leupold rings and a cheapie scope. Whatever you get, remember that a halfway decent scope will cost you. A Leupold VX-3, VX-2 or Redfield is pretty good for the money.

My son just got a Mossberg 500 home-defense shotgun for about $300. This model has a slightly shorter stock and 18.5” barrel. It will accept other Mossberg barrels

I’m going to go against the grain and suggest you stay away from the 10/22. It’s certainly the most popular and it has a bajillion aftermarket parts. After spending another 500-600 dollars above the cost of the 10/22 you almost have a rifle that can compete in terms of accuracy to a Marlin, Savage or CZ.

May I ask why you are looking at all semi-autos?

You need at least one good single shot if this your SHTF plan.

1. Ruger 10-22. yes, not tube fed.

2. I love my FNHR .308, but it blows your $1000 budget by itself

3. Same with a Bennelli, love it but blows your budget.

Note, the only thing I hunt is paper or people that kill my family.
