Bigfoot and Yeti DNA Study Gets Serious

A new university-backed project aims to investigate cryptic species such as the yeti whose existence is unproven, through genetic testing.

Researchers from Oxford University and the Lausanne Museum of Zoology are asking anyone with a collection of cryptozoological material to submit descriptions of it. The researchers will then ask for hair and other samples for genetic identification.

"I'm challenging and inviting the cryptozoologists to come up with the evidence instead of complaining that science is rejecting what they have to say," said geneticist Bryan Sykes of the University of Oxford.

While Sykes doesn't expect to find solid evidence of a yeti or Bigfoot monster, he says he is keeping an open mind and hopes to identify perhaps 20 of the suspect samples. Along the way, he'd be happy if he found some unknown species.

"It would be wonderful if one or more turned out to be species we don't know about, maybe primates, maybe even collateral hominids," Sykes told LiveScience. Such hominids would include Neanderthals or Denosivans, a mysterious hominin species that lived in Siberia 40,000 years ago.

"That would be the optimal outcome," Sykes said.

The project is called the Oxford-Lausanne Collateral Hominid Project. It is being led by Sykes and Michel Sartori of the zoology museum.

Years ago I used an older guy, a game warden here in Washington State, to help me with field work. He called in one day saying he couldn’t help me as they got a report from some lady that saw something big and hairy climb over her barbed wire fence. And he and a guy from the university were going down to investigate and grab a hair sample she said was caught in the fence.

He said they did see some messed up tracks and got some hair that was probably just a bear. Although I don’t recall hearing about bears climbing over fences. Regardless, I found it interesting that the state would pay (presumably?) for two guys to travel 3-4 hours one way just because some lady reported a bigfoot.

You likely didn’t notice but I did mention that last image I posted was without the 6” ice-age fur coat for illustration purposes. In real life, all ice-animals including the Neanderthal had thick and long fur.

Well, it’s hard to argue with something with no facts...

Neanderthal DNA is halfway between ours and that of a chimpanzee, that's the most major fact in the picture. Scientists have no qualms about presenting every other hominid as glorified apes but the Neanderthal has been a sort of a poster child for kum-bay-ah religion, thus it comes as a sort of a shock to many of them when the Neanderthal also turns out to be a glorified ape.
