Good luck with that...
Almost NO ONE allows towing with rental vehicles, too much liability. Besides, you are talking about Semi-level stuff.

Try Ryder, but it might just be cheaper (and safer) in the end to hire a tow company. What are you trying to haul that requires 20K? Certainly not an RV.

Penske or Hertz but you’ll need a CDL. This is a medium duty truck and they mostly lease long term.

Short or long term need? Long or sort distance haul.

Most times, for the infrequent case, you are better off going to u-ship or something like that.

Also, the ONLY thing out there with those kind of towing weights (20k)is the NEW GM Dynamax, which is more of a semi, than a truck.

The TSA is now handling such rentals directly - but you’ll need a permission slip from your local Representative. :)

Gluck. No money in renting those, sky-high liability. You might find a hole-in-the-wall place that has worn-out equipment but still that’s a pretty high rating. You’re probably going need to hire a pro.

The message is that rental companies don’t WANT you towing anything!!!

Small percentage of the consumer public have experience with proper hook-up, let alone towing on the open road.

Scoot your butt down to a U-Haul shop, talk w the manager and read the specs.

Then plan on waiting a week or two for the one you need to become available.

20k is most likely going to require a 5th wheel hitch. Is that what you had in mind?

Hire someone to tow whatever it is for you. That will be easier than finding rental, skill set, and license.

I didn’t give all the twists and snags and complexities.

I have an oddball trailer. custom built with 3 axles. It uses a plain old bumper hitch but with a large ball size. I have the ball so no prob there. I just can’t find a truck with the tow rating that has a bumper on it. My one ton pickup won’t budge this thing. This trailer is loaded heavy. I estimate it between 17500 and 22500 lbs. Tongue weight is small, about 500 lbs.

What I probably need is a ford F550 with a bumper and a diesel motor with two tons of weight on the back for traction. Or maybe an old ford c600 or an international loadstar might do it if they have bumpers. The last time I towed this trailer I had an old Ford F650 which I no longer have.

I think I’m going to start calling friends to ask if I can borrow an old heavy haul farm grain truck or something.

You might try searching the Thomas Register at thomasnet.com. But I would recommend that you contact a reference librarian, particularly in a large city library, who will have experience in doing business reference as well as access to a wide variety of print and online reference sources. I have been very satisfied with the Chicago Public Library’s online reference service.
