Earth Hour observed all over the world. (I'm turning on every light)

What does it look like when the world turns out all the lights? A glimpse will be offered today when millions of participants all over the globe -- from Egypt's Tahrir Square to Washington D.C.'s National Cathedral -- are expected to turn their lights off for an hour in honor of Earth Hour. Sydney's symbolic Opera House and Harbor Bridge were a couple of the first places to go dark, as Australians took part in the global effort to raise awareness over climate change and show the need for sustainability. The event takes place worldwide on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time, during which time people are encouraged to turn off their lights for 60 minutes. ~snip

The organization holds the event annually on the last weekend in March because it's about "the time of the spring and fall equinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres respectively. This allows for near coincidental sunset times in both hemispheres, thereby ensuring the greatest visual impact for a global 'lights out' event," says the WWF Web site. In the United States, five states are participating — Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Montana and New Hampshire -- and almost 60 cities and towns not to mention many more landmarks, buildings, colleges, businesses, and organizations. The rest of the world is acting in a similar fashion. New Zealand got a two-hour head start of Australia, as lights were turned off at Sky Tower in Auckland and parliament buildings in Wellington. Several buildings along Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong participated, including the International Finance Centre, ... ~snip

Libya, Algeria, Bhutan and French Guinea. "Earth Hour 2012 is a celebration of people power," WWF official Dermot O'Gorman told reporters, including AP, hours before the event in Sydney. "(It's) the world's largest mass event in support of the planet."

I’m about 15 miles east of Palm Springs. Can anyone north of San Francisco see the lights from our house?

John 1:5

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

The lights off shore are the vast Korean fishing fleet. Light attracts fish.

Most of them are fishing for squid. I spent many nights weaving through the Sea of Japan squid boat fleet. It's quite blinding.

In China and India they have festival of lights celebrations. In the decadent self-flagellating West we invented something called an “Earth Hour” to be celebrated in total darkness!

We’re just rolling into it here. Not too many lights on to begin with because its still light outside. I’m not turning lights on or off-as far as I’m concerned it’s just another hour of another day.

Not only did I burn the lights and computers and all the TVs, I went out and bought incandescent light bulbs to celebrate the occasion. Take that you tree hugging, Birkenstock wearing weasels!

Earth Hour?
Let me guess: something along the lines of having an hour long moment of silence in the dark for our poor abused planet, right?
Sounds stupid to me.

No, I’m not gonna research the details. Because I don’t care. The fact that it has “Earth” in the title tells me all I need to know. It’s become a sort of anti-buzzword to me. Just like “Green”. When someone starts throwing those two words around I immediately think to myself “OK, this is obviously a load of horse hockey.”

Oh, those pop in the most delightful way, with wonderful turquoise flames and neon green smoke.

One of the hosts says he's going to jam open the refrigerator door and turn on a space heater, then let them battle it out.

ROFL! Well done!

My idiot neighbor did this. I put my lights on. Yeah, sit in the dark for an hour, that’ll save the planet. Don’t they do that every night in Korea? Where’s the saving?

OK...I give up...

what is an energy star???

I buy ACs and other appliances with ‘energy star’ sticker on it...

but you talked about it as if it was a device.

excuse me as on the east coast we have just as many leftists maniacs, but not near the number of tree hugger laws....I can fire up my bbq with charcoal lighter fluid, and use a leaf blower all day....

just do a search for - map light pollution USA - and you'll get several versions - and great about what you're looking for. Like Will Rogers said: “Buy land. They ain't making any more.”

It has always amazed me why people who have money to invest put it the hands of others - like into the stock market, IRA’s etc...

Like the Indians understood - land doesn't disappear. Had I the money, I would own a lot more than my little 1 1/2 acre...but I am thankful for the privacy and peace even this gives me. (and it is surrounded by many acres of additional forest - canopied by stars...)

and grow y our vegetables, get laying hens for eggs, partridge and rabbits for meat, make connections with local farmers, keep a low profile - ;o)...)

“And the meek shall inherit...”

Don’t they do that every night in Korea?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

"South Korea is bright, North Korea is dark. This amazing image is included in the
standard US Department of Defense briefings on North Korea. It was mentioned
in a news briefing on 23 December 2002 by Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, who
stated that "If you look at a picture from the sky of the Korean Peninsula at night,
South Korea is filled with lights and energy and vitality and a booming economy;
North Korea is dark."

My daughter wanted to do this, so we went along with it. She turned off all the lights for an hour, then when she went to bed she left her light on all night.

Well I’m not going to do anything different than normal, but running around and turning on every light just because is a little dumb.

I don’t see the big deal with this. Life will go on.
