Not surprisingly, these paintings attract tens of thousands of visitors every year. However, there is another aspect to this art that often escapes attention, but which is now providing scientists with fresh insights into our recent evolution. Instead of studying those magnificent galloping horses and bisons, researchers are investigating the symbols painted beside them.
These signs are rarely mentioned in most studies of ancient cave art. Some are gathered in groups, some appear in ones or twos, while others are mixed in with the caves' images of animals. There are triangles, squares, full circles, semicircles, open angles, crosses and groups of dots. Others are more complex: drawings of hands with distorted fingers (known as negative hands); rows of parallel lines (called finger flutings); diagrams of branch-like symbols known as penniforms, or little sketches of hut-like entities called tectiforms. In total, 26 specific signs are used repeatedly in these caves, created in the millennia when Europe descended into -- and emerged from -- the last great Ice Age... the symbols provide clear evidence of the way our ancestors moved from representing ideas realistically -- as in those beautiful images of bisons and mammoths -- to the stage where they began to represent concepts symbolically. In some cases, signs appear to emerge from the use of truncated images of an animal and eventually come to act as a symbol for that animal in its entirety. For example, a wavy line used to depict the back of a horse in a larger painting eventually comes to stand for the entire horse in different sets of paintings.

My dad passed away before those things were of general interest. He certainly didn’t equate the petroglyphs with gang banger graffiti.

THey mention that they have these symbols entered into a data base. After weeks of entering recall names into a DB for Verifythe Recall (WI) I can tell you that the prehistoric symbols are easier to read than leftist signatures.

At the Valley of Fire in south Nevada there is a trail leading to ""The Rat's Tank", a real desert water hole. On the way there are many petroglyphs on both sides of the canyon leading to the tank. There are many signs information signs pointing out these petroglyphs.
Every one of them claim no one has ever been able to decypher them not even contemporary Indians.

Since there has never been a translation or meaning other than "a picture", the caveman/indian must have been writing in code?
Chinese still write in pictures but at least they have memorized some kind of language to go along with it.

I remember reading somewhere that many of the Australian Aboriginal sacred drawings were maps and *deeds*, mostly to do with the presence and the *ownership* of water sources.
Intresting interpretation.
"This cave is mine." More like "Gilroy was here"?
I know of other petroglyphs next to a small stream near Pine Valley, Utah. A rather remote town north of St. George. "Just passing through, the water's yours. Don't hurt me." Followed by a signature? Gee, maybe I could write a book on deciphering petroglyphs?
In any event, no one claims to be able to translate or "decipher" any of the "codes".

The extended middle digit seems to be a universal symbolic language which is primitive but still understood worldwide.
It may well have been the starting point of the fatal dustup between Cain and Abel.
