LIVERMORE (CBS 5) — A 700-pound Livermore man’s plea for help to lose weight has become a viral sensation on YouTube in less than 24 hours.

Robert Gibbs, who turned 23 on Friday, said he is a prisoner in his own body.

“I spend most of my days right here, watching TV.” Gibbs said from his couch. “I have to slide forward to get off this couch. I’m just trapped, and there’s no way out.”

On Thursday, something clicked for the Livermore man who has struggled with his weight since the age of four. He has also been hospitalized twice. As Gibbs was stuck in bed, he recorded the video.

Sad. I wish him well and will say a prayer for him.

He only needs willpower and a 1200 calorie a day diet and what ever level of exercise he can handle.

Hubby, a retired firefighter, had one of these ‘clients’ for years. Eventually they had to cut the side out of his mobile home to get him out....after he died in there and someone noticed the stink.

Probably a lot more than that. I suspect that his “food addiction” is something a lot more ominous. In any event, there are now medications designed for the morbidly obese that must drop a lot of weight immediately. But they can only safely be administered in hospital, and monitored with frequent blood tests.

If he can move his arms he can start exercizing, he needs to eat the very minimum number of calories and it’ll take a long time but he has to start somewhere.

He should have started a long time ago.

He is almost to the point where it becomes impossible to lose weight.

How does a person eat that much? That’s what I can’t understand.

He should have started a long time ago.

Geez, he's been fighting weight problems since he was four. The guy is calling out for help - and sounds desperate. It's easy for people to pile on when others are struggling. A lot of his problem probably has to do with genetics - and there but for the grace of God...

From the article: the Livermore man who has struggled with his weight since the age of four

Sad that people feel the need to put others down who have problems that they themselves my not have. Having a son with schizophrenia, I know how that feels first hand.

The bottom line is, the young man has a problem - he knows he has a problem, and if it was that easy to fix, people who struggle all their lives with weight problems (like Rush Limbaugh) would not struggle, would they?

I know there is a lot of genetics involved. For most of my early adult life, I had the opposite problem and was under weight (a lot under weight). People around me - well meaning of course - thought it should be so easy for me to just "eat more and gain weight." Well, I went on a reverse diet and was eating enough too kill a moose, including three large milk shakes a day with this mega-calorie goop added to them! After several months of force-feeding myself, I doubt that I gains 2 pounds. As soon as I went back to my normal three squares a day, whatever little weight I had gained disappeared overnight. The only thing that finally helped was getting older. Somewhere in my mid-to late 40's I finally started to put on some weight (I'm close to 60 now). I wasn't eating differently, but my metabolism was slowing down. Now I am what most would consider in the "normal" range for my height (5'9" and 155lbs) but for most of my life, until mid-40s, I fluctuated within a pound or two of 130lbs - I was a real bean pole and I hated it!

This young man has the opposite problem, but I can understand his frustration and I think what he really needs is for people to say a prayer for him. Silly I know, but there it is.

Gaining and maintaining that much weight doesn’t happen by osmosis. If he can’t get up, somebody is feeding him. Note to whoever it is, that’s not love, you’re killing him.

May he succeed in his resolve...and get a restraining order against whomever is force-feeding him.
