Last year marked the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, commemorated by the Atlantic in a special issue, now available online. Although photography was still in its infancy, Civil War photographers produced thousands of images, bringing the harsh realities of war to those on the home front in a new and visceral way. As brother fought brother and the future of the United States was uncertain, the public appetite for information was fed by these images from the trenches, rivers, farms and cities that became fields of battle. Today's collection is part 1 of 3, covering the places of the Civil War: the battleships, prisons, hospitals, cities and farms where history was made. Tomorrow's installment will feature some of the people involved in the conflict, and on Friday I'll be sharing some of the amazing three-dimensional stereographs of the war. Keep in mind, as you view these photographs, that they were taken 150 years ago -- a glimpse of the United States, which was only 85 years old at the time.

All these years later, and it is still difficult to think of men walk-charging against something like a cannonball that would just plain blow a hole in you.

Civil War?? I think they mean the War of Northern Aggression led by Lincoln the tyrant. Sherman the butcher is no better than a Bin Laden. Maybe even worse.

Manc, by you guys x means people that aren’t yankees, you know, the evil Southerners. Most of his pals have been zotted, Non-Sequitur and his 3 retread names, Trumandogz, and some others. The Lincoln coven is dwindling.

ah go it, Thanks, I guess they don;'t know where I am from then or the misses. for the record to all. After living in parts of Europe and going to different countries and then living up north and down here then I can honestly say southerners are by far the best, most friendliest, give the shirt off their backs kind of people I have ever met . The woven is getting smaller and smaller BTW Just watched a documentary about Gettysburg, of course slightly biased but good nonetheless. Lot of brave men indeed and it seemed back then that they would die for a cause and die as a man unlike today for many. My oldest just got back form DC and he got me a couple of books, Gods and Generals and another with all quotes, letters and speeches from various folk back then and it truly is a great read, as it gets in the minds of those back then instead of just reading what someone thinks they meant. Dan Stickle a union officer, what a fruit loop he was and the very first to use temp insanity plea for killing his wifes lover.
