You’re right, I grew up thinking they were huge planes, and when I finally got to climb around in one I was amazed how small they actually were inside.

I took one look at the tail gunner position and although I’m not a big guy, I couldn’t imagine fitting in there for 14 hour missions, much less having the big brass ones to do it.

Today, I still remember when my brothers lifted me up to go inside The Memphis Belle, almost 60 years ago, as it sat on a
tall concrete pedestal at the NG armory in Memphis.

It was only a few months ago that I saw the movie for the first time on satellite TV.

Thanks for the photographs. I can remember when these bombers were not memories. I love the sound of their motors.

I’m partial to the B-24 because it was a local product.

Thanks for posting those amazing photos!

The B-17 is truly a work of art and a great tribute to American ingenuity and creativity.

Can you imagine hearing one overhead during WW II? If American, you felt safe knowing THESE were protecting you, if an enemy — you knew you were dead!!

My uncle was a B-26 Marauder pilot. He went down in October 1943, KIA — my family has never gotten over it.

Beautiful aircraft - Beautiful shots.

Note the access cockpit ladder that the boys of 42-45
didn’t need!

I have always had a fasination with the B-17s. I remember seeing the Memphis Belle when I was a kid. Now there is one that flys around here often. I can’t get an up close look to get the details, just enough to recognize it as B-17. It flys from the Conroe Texas airport. I can always recognize the sound of those 4 radial engines when it is around, though, even if I can not see the plane itself.
