Huh. I have a nun who was from the south, she teaches the Bible study I attend......she always says “nanny, nanny, boo boo”........is that a southern thing, too?

As I child in elementary school, we had one teacher who would place a child’s tooth (must have had a deal with the tooth fairy) into a clear class of cola and we watched in dismay as it slowly disappeared. Big lesson for little soda drinking wannabees. Back then soda was a once a week treat if that in our innocent world.

Hi, tioga, and thx for the thread! The word hotspur also puts me in mind of two warships, one historical and one fictional, the former a WW II era British naval vessel, and the latter a vessel of the same name in David Weber's Honorverse. I think there was also a ship of the same name in the Hornblower books. FWIW :-)

I’m sorry, I did see some more info on that after I hit send. I saw where the state stores have a set amount they have to send the State and last year they were in the hole due to various reasons including cheaper alcohol available in neighboring states. I understand your concerns about replacing the revenue.

The sales tax went up 1% also. I don’t mind paying it because I know that everyone has to pay it. Whereas my property taxes went largely to the public school systems, for which I receive no benefit.

It never ceases to amaze me the direction a word will take. Such a silly word, yet it invokes so much history. I learned a lot about that today. Thanks for sharing.

Never heard the nanny boo thing-but it sounds like a nun-ish substitute for profanity rather than a regional saying-kind of like oh, pooh, aww, shucks, etc.
