It is NOT the responsibility of government to replace small businesses. If you want the nanny state just roll on over and let govt take care of you. I want free enterprise and smaller government. PA goes to far taking over all liquor stores. You will be sorry.

McCain endorsed Romney today. Rush said someone in the audience yelled out that Romney need to pick McCain for VP....LMAO.

Rush was hysterical. The guy who loses to McCain picks McCain who lost to Obama. TWO proven LOSERS trying to bring down Obama? OMG.........could it really come to that?

Thank you!

People don’t say that where you are? It is what you say as a warning to someone who is making boasts or threats they can’t possibly back up-my dad used to say it to us kids-”Careful, boy/girl-don’t let your alligator mouth overload your hummingbird ass.” Must be a southern thing...

No offense, but I find the idea of the state running the liquor (or any other) business entirely creepy and big brother-ish-this purchase exceeds your quota for the month, comrade-I must report you to the state office of overindulgence for counseling...

They haven’t replaced anything. The system has been in place since Prohibition ended.

I do not defend it except on the grounds I already stated - making changes now would not be in the interests of taxpayers or anyone else not connected to the politicians. It’s a simple concept.

That’s the way they run it in Qatar, but not PA.

Honestly, it’s not the ideal system, but I can’t imagine change helping the cause. Selling the stores would be a boost of revenue which would put off changes that need to happen. Selling the stores would allow politicians to benefit (and their cronies) and the spoils would go to inefficient things like public transit and education, and to prop up unions and bloated organizations, etc.

Then the money would be gone, we’d be more in debt and no structural change would happen. Plus a source of revenue would be gone. Win-win-win.

Did the people in Indiana benefit from selling off their turnpike?

Ah heck, ma’am ... Tweren’t nuttin’ hard really. (Robt blushes, skuffs toe briefly ... Looks up discretely to see if the move was noticed.)

See, the Word of the Day has a long tradition of such Angelic (er, Englic) navel behaviors and honours on the historic shores of Lake Medina, going all the way back to the very first WOTD proclaiming the HMS Coquette.

Shoot even somebody as old (er, historic) as xsex can probably remember launching at least one Coquette! Ought to at least, there’s been six of them...

HMS Coquette
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Six ships of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS Coquette. A seventh was ordered but never completed:

HMS Coquette was a 28-gun sixth rate captured from the French in 1783 and in service in 1785.
HMS Coquette was a 20-gun sixth rate launched in 1807 and sold in 1817.
HMS Coquette was to have been an 18-gun corvette. She was ordered in 1835 and cancelled in 1851.
HMS Coquette was a wooden screw gunvessel launched in 1855 and broken up in 1868.
HMS Coquette was a composite screw gunboat launched in 1871 and sold in 1889.
HMS Coquette was a D class destroyer launched in 1897 and sunk in 1916.
HMS Coquette was an Algerine class minesweeper launched in 1943 and scrapped in 1958.

I’m not astonished at all. Any soda pop is acidic. They say Coke is good for cleaning the gunk off your car’s battery terminals.

Not astonished either, but reading about mouse carcasses dissolving in what you are currently drinking is decidedly unappetizing.

It is a quite solid defense (even if it’s not a quite solid mouse).

If I recall correctly, when we lived in PA there was a State run store that sold alcohol and wine, but another place sold beer. And you had to buy an entire case of beer, not individual six packs. But, we could go to the local pub and buy a six pack from them. Was that legal or not? (Correction, we never bought from the pub but were told you could and watched it happen several times while waiting for our table for dinner)

I do hope you were joking about only union people being able to handle such a responsibility as the sale of alcohol. And of course government intervention in anything just raises the price of everything involved - so any profit from the stores is probably being eaten up by the cost of union employees.

Yes, it is legal for bars to sell six packs to go. (But no more than two to any one person.)

And yes, I was being snide about the massive training and unionized expertise required.

But, the state store system does make a profit for the state. it contributes revenue to the treasury. Over and above the taxes on liquor that would remain under a private system.

I would need to see a good plan on how to replace that revenue stream, and have some politicians that were trustworthy before I would approve of any privatization. Change just for philosophical reasons is not good enough.

You must have a lot better class of politicians there than we have here. That would never happen here.
