Hey for my fellow shooters out there, question do any of my fellow Freepers own a Dragunov SVD or actual AK-47. I recently got a up close and personal look at a Russian made Dragunov with green dot scope at a gun show in Va. and had the chance to fire a real full auto AK-47 in the Persian Gulf some years ago.
I remember here stories as a kid about Soldiers in Vietnam taking AK-47 off Vietcong, bring them home, leaving them in a foot locker for a decade or more, then pull them out, kicking off the rust and going to the range to pump off a few.
As far as the Dragunov, I have been doing my research and the more I read the more I like it and recently saw a piece on the military channel on its usage by Russian Special Forces.
In truth, a “sniper rifle” is such mostly in how it is employed in a given instance. I’m pretty sure the first “snipers” used smoothbore muskets.
I know that many if not most “Drags” are actually just stretched AKs
Finding a real Drag and having to load your own match 7.62x54 is probably reason enough to get an AR-10 instead.
If you want to be a sniper - you want the best weapon to reach out and touch someone. The SVD would be the worst choice. ANY hunting rifle will beat it.
I’ve read the Afghanis like to cut several inches off the RPK barrels so it’s lighter and looks cool (like the so-called `krinkov’ SBR—`It’s better to look deadly than be deadly’).
You can’t change the barrel out on the RPK and it’s magazine fed, so it’s basically an AK with a thicker barrel. (And no bipod when `customized’.)
As long as its strapped with lots of green tape, all’s right with Allah. And for some reason they have a real love affair with the 1975 Russian milled receiver AKM.
The Soviets started out with the stamped receiver, went to milled, then returned to stamped. The Chinese stay with milled receivers because the tremendous amount of labor required isn’t a problem for them.
Milled receivers make for a heavier, more expensive carbine which takes longer to cool.
This should inspire some debate, but I’m going to bed.
I’ve seen some super slow motion video of the AK firing and the barrel wobbles like a wet noodle on either side of the gas port midway down the barrel.
Only way to get to the shooting range includes a 5 mile, deep water, canoe trip.
If one wants to get a truely accurate Mosin Nagant without guessing, get one of the Finns with a good bore. Either a model 27, 28, 28/30, or a 39. I have a Finnish Model 39, it is so accurate as to be spooky.

Your point?
The AK47 is a pray and spray firearm, except 98% of those spraying dont believe in the Christian God or any God.
There must be a reason that it's the most prolific assault rifle in the world. As far as you religious comment- it has no bearing on the weapon's performance.
The AK47 is a simple machine, so simple even the uneducated masses that buy it can keep it operating by cannibalizing parts off the thousands laying around.
That was the object of it's design.
Seems the ignorant still think they are fine guns...
It may not be a "fine" gun, but it is an extremely useful tool. I was happier carrying an AK than the "Barbie-Toy for Boys" M-16 series. The only issue I ever had with the AK series assault rifles is the fact that the forearm will get real hot, real fast during sustained fire. A vertical fore grip takes care of that issue.
For the basic Kalashnikov rifle, the AK47 and variants, actually hitting anything with one much past 100 yards is problematical.
Horsehockey. Zero it at 200meters.
Marlin made good lever action rifles, until Remington took them over, now they are a POS. When buying a used one, if not marked JM, pass it by.
The Marlin owners forum are reporting all sorts of problems with the Remington made ones.
This is why a lot of us sell or exchange our guns privately without the government meddling in the control of our property.
[I heard once thats the sign of a free people]
Thats to even up the odds that our means of self-defense arent as likely to be lake bed bound in the future.
Oddly, it just seems to be the ‘pedigreed’ guns, regardless of breed, that drown.
The gun show mongrels without papers, vaccinations, or neutering seem to be able to swim just fine from day 1.
Not true,
You can purchase ammo directly from a subsidiary of the russian military and have it shipped directly to your front door.
Buy a thousand rounds and it comes in a wooden crate with old soviet markings on it. Packed in sealed tin cans.
Kid has a Dragonov, ak74 and Saiga `12 ga.
All very nice.
I have to say that one of the best mixed breeds have to be the Stripped lower receiver/lower parts kit and upper receiver AR-15s
A nice sport utility rifle with a good mix of genes and a fair avoidance of the 4473 inbreeding that is more common with the pedigreed varieties.
Including said smoothbore musket? You missed my point. Sniping is just a tactic, independent of the weapon used. The weapon merely sets effective range, all else being equal. Besides, I’m the guy who told the poster to get a bolt gun because these semis are really DMRs by today’s standards. Still, the SVD and its ilk are not terrible weapons by any stretch. Talk to some soldiers who’ve had to face them; they are more than accurate enough to kill at 800 meters plus. At close range they are devastating, with a rate of fire that will remind you why nobody carries bolt action battle rifles anymore. The saving grace for the good guys is that the muzzies aren’t big on effective training.
I like the Saiga for the price. Not that I have one or anything...
