In truth, a “sniper rifle” is such mostly in how it is employed in a given instance. I’m pretty sure the first “snipers” used smoothbore muskets.

If you want to be a sniper - you want the best weapon to reach out and touch someone. The SVD would be the worst choice. ANY hunting rifle will beat it.

Including said smoothbore musket? You missed my point. Sniping is just a tactic, independent of the weapon used. The weapon merely sets effective range, all else being equal. Besides, I’m the guy who told the poster to get a bolt gun because these semis are really DMRs by today’s standards. Still, the SVD and its ilk are not terrible weapons by any stretch. Talk to some soldiers who’ve had to face them; they are more than accurate enough to kill at 800 meters plus. At close range they are devastating, with a rate of fire that will remind you why nobody carries bolt action battle rifles anymore. The saving grace for the good guys is that the muzzies aren’t big on effective training.
