A tourist from Tennessee waltzed into one of the most secure sites in the city and politely asked a cop if she could check her weapon.
Instead, she was dragged out in cuffs.
Now, Meredith Graves, 39, is facing at least three years in prison for thinking New Yorks gun laws are anything like those in the Bible Belt.
Graves, a fourth-year medical student, showed up at the memorial on Dec. 22 to pay her respects during a trip north for a job interview.
She didnt realize that the loaded .32-caliber pistol in her purse would be a problem until she saw a sign at the site that read, No guns allowed, sources said.
She remembered she had the gun on her, a source said. She walked up to a security guard and said, I have this gun. Where can I check it?
The guard told her that she was in luck because of law enforcement day and led her to another area.
When she got to that section, she asked another cop, We have this gun can we check it in here? We [my husband and I] are not law-enforcement.
Thats when she was arrested.
Graves, who has a full legal carry permit in Tennessee, was locked up on a weapons-possession charge and held on $2,000 bond that she posted yesterday. She is due in court on March 19.
Shell soon find out exactly how serious New York City is about illegal guns. The Manhattan DAs Office is pursuing a conviction on felony gun possession carrying a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years.
Mayor Bloomberg, with the help of the five district attorneys, has crusaded against the flow of illegal guns, especially from the South.

That’s an interesting tactic. If the feds pass the CCW bill, would that make her arrest moot? If not, I wouldn’t want to be be her with an arrest warrant out if she travels to other states and gets stopped for something. She’s screwed.
There’s smart and then book smart and I think she is probably the latter.
If you don’t care for culture in general or music or the arts or sports or great food then there is no reason to go just stay home and watch tv.
High praise coming from a frog!
;<)
Two can play:
They should pass a law in Tennesee that says
(1) that any person, including law enforcement or mayors,
(2) who arrests, prosecutes, or convicts a Tennesee concealed handgun licenese holder for a weapons violation when said CHL holder, if a concealed license holder in that state, would otherwise be legally in possession of the weapon;
(3) commits a felony against the People of the State of Tennesee punishable by no less that 20 years in prison, no possibility of parole.
She was effectively turning her gun over to law enforcement. There is still an active Gun Buyback program in NYC. If a Gangbanger was turning in a probable murder weapon he’d do it with no questions asked. She has a 14th Amendment case here.
Silly lady, thought she lived in a free country.
NRA where are you?. The Second Amendment is clear. This case should be fought all the way to the Supreme Court. What happens if she goes home and simply fails to return to NY for a court hearing? Surely Tennessee authorities would not extradite her. Or would they?
There isn't enough money in the world to get me anywhere near NYC.
I wouldn't mind visiting, but I wouldn't want to live there.
It was stupid of her to assume. All I can say to her is to get a good lawyer or she will be facing jail time.
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
Now she may lose her right to carry in Tennessee. Depending on the charges. New York’s unconstitutional Sullivan Law has been in effect for damn near a century.
What a Maroon!
We have culture, excellent music, awesome food, plenty of sports professional and college, we do not have broadway, but we have the arts. NYC needs to be reminded on occasion that it is nolonger the center of the universe.
Last time I checked,I could find all that in Boston....
New York’s a fun city to visit - and also has enormous photographic potential. I’ve taken some great shots in Central Park and along the rivers. But I wouldn’t live there now for all the money in the world. With his fetish for lifestyle laws and social controls, Nanny Bloomberg has turned it into a neo-fascist theme park.
I did carry while I was there but I damned sure didn't tell anyone. I had a .357 double deringer in a boot top holster.
The lady would have been fine if she'd kept her mouth shut!
Boy, there are a lot of idiotic posts on this thread. One poster called her a “marone”. Who is the dumb-bell?
The 2nd Amendment trumps state attempts to restrict gun possession. If the NRA takes her case, it may be interesting to watch what New York does to avoid overturning an unconstitutional city and state ‘law’.
I’ve never been a big fan of boycotts, but this is one I could get behind, gun owners should make an issue of this and boycott NY, in a very big way, there were approximately a million and a half guns purchased in December alone, that’s a lot of gun owners, many new owners. I have no reason to go to NY at the moment, but I would be willing to write a letter in support of a boycott, to whom ever in NY would be appropriate. If all gun rights organizations got behind such a movement, it could have an impact.
