Archaeologists have discovered mysterious stone carvings at an excavation site in Jerusalem. The carvings - which were engraved thousands of years ago - have baffled experts.
Israeli archaeologists excavating in the oldest part of the city discovered a complex of rooms with three "V" shapes carved into the floor. Yet there were no other clues as to their purpose and nothing to identity the people who made them.
Some experts believe the markings were made at least 2,800 years ago and may have helped hold up some kind of wooden structure. Others say an ancient people may have held ritual functions there.
The purpose of the complex is another aspect of the mystery.
There are straight lines on the walls and floors - something archaeologists see as evidence of careful engineering. The markings are also located close to the city's only natural water source - the Gihon spring - suggesting they may have had an important role.
Eli Shukron, a co-director of the project that found the markings, said they were a "little bit" mysterious.
"It's something that is here on the floor in this room from the First Temple period and we don't know yet what it means," he added. The First Temple period refers to a period in the ancient city beginning in the 10th century before the Christian era.
With experts unable to come up with a theory about the markings, the archaeologists posted a photo on Facebook and asked for suggestions.
Opinions ranged from the thought-provoking - "moulds into which molten metal could have been poured" - to the generic - "ancient Hebrew or Egyptian characters".

I’ve seen this before in other parts of the world. The grooves are meant to catch the blook of sacrificed animals.
After all, a stone floor covered with blood is slippery and dangerous.
Who is to say those are Vs? Maybe they are As for Allah? sarc//off
“This way to the Egress.”*
*Obscure, but someone will remember.
Just looking at the picture, the area appears to be chute-like. The door is center to a narrow opening, which gradually broadens. the floor appears to slope downward from the door. This seems to suggest the use of gravity. It does appear that baffles is a likely explanation, if this is a chute.
I'm sure the Muslim Brotherhood will be along shortly to claim it as yet another "Muslim holy site" that the evil Joooos have stolen, and they are OUTRAGED! that the infidels have published pictures of it.
Small figurines (like “fertility statues” and whatnot) could easily have been used to advertise cathouses, or were presents for mom from little kids. The idea that the famous stone age cave paintings were made by kids is starting to catch on as well.
That’s what I’m saying. That Lion man/woman was little more than a doll if you ask me. The face is downright cute! Some little cave tot probably loved the big kitties, so their parents carved them one that wouldn’t eat the whole clan.
What symbols of the same era does it look like?
God did it.
First off: there’s precedent in the Bible with God fingering the Commandments.
Secondly: there’s the axiom of IF there’s NO current scientific explanation, then ONLY God could have done it. ONLY when scientific theory arises, that God can be called questionable. Even that is suspect if such goes against the axiom of God Did It.
Right?
One thing that raises cause for pause: God didn’t build doors that way. No way and no how.
I’m sort of leaning towards them not being God-fingered.
They almost look akin to building gauges.
The first thought that entered my mind was along those lines, rather morbid. The J channels on the sides of tables used by morticians.
