Path to the nomination: Did Cain’s end yesterday?
Washington Post ^ | 08:45 AM ET, 11/01/2011 | By Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 11/01/2011 7:09:51 AM PDT by DBCJR

Herman Cain was in the center of a firestorm, largely of his own making, yesterday. He knew before he entered the presidential race that he had a sexual harassment settlement in his past. He knew, ever since Politico started questioning his campaign, that a story was afoot. He knew he had to get the story out quickly and truthfully. And yet, by the end of the day, the business executive peddling his leadership skills and know-how looked somewhat like the hapless PBS executive who eventually got ousted for screwing up the Juan Williams firing.

...

Iowans don’t need to believe he is innocent of sexual harassment to vote for him. But they do need to trust him. Virtually everything that happened yesterday with regard to this issue served to damage his trustworthiness. Beyond the point of no return? We’ll find out.

This should serve as a warning to all the vanity candidates (i.e., those without experience who run essentially as celebrities) in this and future cycles: A presidential nomination process is brutal and serious stuff. If they think there is no downside to competing, they are wrong. They may, at the end, come out diminished people, less respected and liked than when they went in.

Some people call this unfair and harmful to our political process. I disagree. If unserious and ill-prepared candidates try to take the voters for a ride, don’t bother to understand the issues or even their own weaknesses, they pretty much get what they deserve. And if voters bury their heads in the sand and vote for them anyway, they deserve what follows as well.

I ran a vanity thread the other day, asking fellow FR’s where I might find a Cain bumper sticker.

Made my own this morning, here’s the vanity thread with some links. :D

Yes I confess it redefines “vanity” to a whole new low, to actually link to one’s own vanity thread. Sorry about that all, but here’s the link with some good sources and ideas:

Yep. No matter how this was addressed, the articles were already written by the ‘experts’ about about how he ‘did it wrong’ and it shows how he is not prepared.

They did fine. My only issue is that she should have left it as is by 2:00 yesterday and moved on. He added a little more and more with each event. Overall, they did ok.

Mr. Cain’s path will probably not be stopped
by this dirt from Mitt Romney
and his malicious team of surrogate political cross dressers
and saboteurs.

I am interested always in studying how the other side thinks...so I have watched some MSNBC, read some left sites...occasionally wander over to Democratic Underground.

About a week ago I was watching something on MSNBC...I think they are hiring schoolboys to commentate now and there was a discussion about Cain and they were FLABBERGASTED that he could POSSIBLY be gaining and they said everyone would move to Canada if he got the nomination.

Haven’t checked out MSNBC since.

“Mr. Cain, when did you stop beating your wife?”

“Aha! Cain didn’t handle that question well, he’s unsuitable for office!”

“Mr. Clinton, are you as disgusted as we are at those who stoop to scurrilous accusations for political gain and bring up old news about your serial rapes and perjuries, which are all just about sex?”

Unlike liberals, my response does not depend on whether I like the candidate. If something like this was true and substantive, it would affect my support for Cain. The problem is that I expected exactly this charge to come out about now (and almost posted that prediction but didn’t want to give the DU/Kos lurkers any ideas). I suspect this is typical liberal racism, playing up fears of a stereotypical black man’s sex drive. It’s pretty silly to play this game unless they have something relevant to put out there. This “scandal” looks like much ado about nothing.

High tech lynching by Karl (Marx) Rove and Romney operatives.

I will be sending my $99.99 check to Herman Cain’s campaign.

Thanks for pushing me over the edge, Romney!

Yeah, perhaps Cain’s inexperience in dealing with these situations is what will kill him off. IMO, he should have deflected it...something like “why yes I have heard that might be the case for something from twenty years ago but I was more involved with applying for a schlarship as a foreign national while giving the public the impression I was a US citizen at that time.” Use humor to put the spot light on his enemy or perhaps something like “I don’t recall the issues involved because I was trying to stop the imposition of mandatory public health care on restaurants in Massachusettes.”

Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin dutifully following her editors direction scribed “another $5.500 unreported Serices In Kind Political campaign contribution” to the Obama through WAPO (The Washington Post) facilities. The donation exceeds the personal donation limit.

While contending the Washington Post observes the highest standards of objective journalism . The contribution did not cite the questionable source or verify if there was a criminal charge. This contribution will enable Cain opponents in the Republican Party hammer away quoting WAPO (The Washington Post) and other press services furthur the racist afro-american male stereotype as appled to Cain

No worries. I agree she is a Romney shill.

On this article, she has a point. If Cain learns from it and manages to actually run a real camapaign for the nomination, heck I may even start warming up. But, he keeps making a fool of himself every time he speaks. Yesterday was no different than how he mumbled and jumbled the abortion question.

Cain has no political experience, except one failed run for office

Actually, it is two failed runs for office. In 2000 he had a brief run for the presidency. In 2004 he ran for the Senate and lost.

His 'political' experience if from three years as a Washington lobbyist for the restaurant industry.

What ended yesterday is the myth that Politico is anything but another leftist propaganda outlet.

To me, that says he probably reads FR and believes he can do no wrong. To believe his own publicity is a dangerous thing for any candidate, and if Cain wants to remain in the race, he’s got to be more objective and professionalize a bit. Maybe he needs to hire new managers or something.

Cain is doing such a poor job he needs to hire you as his savior and campaign manager.

In the meantime he'll just have to plod along without you, topping all polls along the way.
