Okay, we all know Hurricane Irene was hyped to the gills.
WHY?
Was it slow news? Was it media infatuation with Obama at the helm of FEMA?
You just described CNN in the '80s.
A significant portion of the media is on the east coast. First the hype, then comes the self congratulation.

Hard to garner much sympathy from me for folks who choose to invest money to build a house on a sandbar.
Politics didnt have to have anything to do with it, its just the media looking for a story. I've seen this before, and I know I'll see it again.
we both live in CT. I am unscathed, but many of my friends in Westport, Fairfield, Bethel and Bristol are not. Others have been told they won’t have power for a week.
Many homes were lost on the coast and downtown Bristol was a river today out of nowhere. People died.
Your endless need for conspiracy is so tiresome. A hurricane was headed potentially for DC, Philly, NYC, Providence, Hartford, Boston. A Lot of people live in these areas. a LOT.
btw, Brattleboro, VT was pretty much destroyed by flooding. Ask them about “hype.”
As another FReeper pointed out, Irene probably saved more lives than she took by keeping people inside on a summer weekend. NBC reported that on an average Saturday night, NYPD makes over 400 arrests. Last night there were 34.

It kicked the crap out of us here in the Catskill region. I think many will eat their words tomorrow when the film footage gets out.
Gilboa Dam is ready to burst, which will flood many small towns. Schoharie creek is flooding. We are unable to get more than a mile from our place due to flooded out roads. Every creek is out of it’s banks. Trees are down everywhere and the wind is still blowing hard with gusts around 40-50 mph. The ground is saturated and trees are uprooting as I type this. I just heard another one go down back in our woods. I’ll be checking for damage tomorrow and most likely will be behind a chain saw for at least a week.
The storm turned inland and we got hit much harder than you are hearing about. NYC got lucky.

From an email I just received from a friend that lives 45 minutes south of us:
“We got blitzed here by Irene, I am running a generator so I have some power, but trees are down everywhere and the villages of Potter Hollow, Oak Hill and Durham have been evacuated. I measured 14 inches of rain so far and my garden washed away.”.....
“...my road is washed out and I cannot go anywhere. The NY State thruway is closed. Houses have washed away and people are missing and presumed dead.”
Bingo! The media will hype what they think will get people to tune in. (It's that simple, but some people prefer to see a conspiracy.)
Before the 24 hour news cycle and the internet, it would have been a big east coast news story, with brief mentions in other parts of the country on the nightly news.
The “Ruling Class” were in its path.
Period.
Have been watching videos and as you say some places are definately getting hit hard...very hard. Roads completely gone....water half way up their buildings....and debrei all over.
I sometimes think people expected “tornado” winds and damage, which is a horse of a different color altogether.

I quit paying attention to the storm when I saw that fool in sewage-laden sea foam. I am also far away from it, and so I knew my own would not be in danger from it. I do have a good buddy in VA I haven’t heard from, though, but he knows what he’s doing. Blue water, all the way.
What was the bigger non-event, the windstorm or the earthquake?
been there, done that, lived through David, Frederick, storms in Hawaii that shut down power, typhoons in the pacific, storms in the north atlantic while at sea...
Good Gracious, winter storms do more damage and we all expect it in New England
I think the CAT I hurricane, the arthquake was a rare event, and it was not a small quake, either, especially for the east coast, a 5.8 is unheard of in memory for us, it would be like a hurricane hitting LA...excuse me, TYPHOON hitting LA, CAT I or not, LA dont get typhoons
but if it did, even a CAT I or just under would be huge news
