Which of Americas favorite pets is top dog (or the cats meow) when it comes to smarts and skills?
We turned to science to put the age-old rivalry to the test.
If you disagree with the results, join the debate at our special Dogs vs. Cats celebration site.
May the best pet win!
Which Have More Stamina? The sled dogs that compete in Alaskas annual Iditarod run about 1,100 miles in less than two weeks, often in temperatures as low as -40 degrees F. They use fat as their primary energy sourcefar better than any other athletic species thats been studied, says exercise physiologist Michael Davis, who notes that a 55-pound husky can burn as many as 12,000 calories a day. Daviss research has also shown that sled dogs have an enormous capacity to process oxygen. Cats are more like sprinters: Theyre capable of short bursts of energy but lack the aerobic endurance of ultra-runners like huskies.

Cats vs. Dogs. I still miss both of our knuckleheads. There was nothing funnier nor sweeter than seeing our 8 lb. orange tiger stripe cat curled up like a cinnamon roll between the legs of our 140 lb. bullmastiff.

I like them both. You can go away for weekend and leave cats water and food, and they won't eat everything on the first day like a dog will.
They both have desirable traits, in different ways.

My two Labs keep the bed nice and warm in the winter. Plus, They're good alarm clocks.
And I don't think many burglers are afraid of a cats meow as much as they are a big dog's bark.

Dogs, trained to be fighters, watch dogs, herders, circus performers, etc. ... they are rewarded with food and a place to sleep.
Cats chase the occasional mouse and sleep the rest of the time ... they are rewarded with food and a place to sleep.
And they say dogs are smarter, please.

This seems like a good place to ask if any Freepers know a SE Texas breeder with Spitz or Border Collies. I recently lost my 11 year old Spitz and am feeling sort of hollow without her company. I've been checking classifieds and even emailed the AKC local chapter to inquire but with no luck. There is a glut of Yorkies, Bulldogs and Poodles in the ads, but they're not for me. I need a smart dog with an attitude, confident and not docile.
I'm near the gulf coast but travel North quite often, so anything up to Tyler would be ok.

If anyone on this thread thinks that dogs aren’t man’s best friend.... Try the following test.....
Lock your dog and your wife in the trunk of your car for one hour....
After the one hour is up, open the trunk and see who’s happy to see you....

A cat will eventually eat your face.

A cat will eventually eat your face.I'm sure as the dog enters starvation mode, he'll do the same. With larger mouthfuls. And bigger teeth.
