"The Undefeated," the documentary about Sarah Palin, appears to have suffered box office defeat.

The film opened in 10 locations last week and upped its exposure to 14 cities this weekend. But Reuters today reports that even as the number of screening venues increased, box office revenue has declined by more than 63 percent. It grossed only $24,000 this past weekend.

What say ye, Palin worshippers?

"Bite me" seems to work. But feel free to substitute "F**k you", "Kiss my a**", "Go piss up a rope", or "Choke on your own vomit".

The movie pulled in $24,000.00 over the weekend in 14 theaters.

That’s $1,714.29 per screen.

With ticket prices of around $10.00 these days, that’s means about 171 people saw the movie at each location (on average).

With multiple screenings per weekend, one can only imagine the size of the audience at most of those screenings.

Ouch!

It now appears that AMC has pulled the plug on all of the initial ten theaters that originally showed "The Undefeated."
Movietickets.com has NO SHOWTIMES posted online after Thursday, July 28 -- except for the new four theaters just added. :(
It appears that those of us who live near the original theaters have been TESTED, and found wanting.
Not sure exactly what this means for Governor Palin's campaign, but we need to prepare for the "blowback" from this -- which may be substantial.

RonDog, at least a year ago and perhaps as much as two years ago, I tried to loft the idea that a public figure could overexpose themselves so much, that it would actually wind up driving people away. That wasn’t a very popular opinion then, and I’m sure isn’t today.

The sad fact is, those fourteen movie theaters pulled in 171 people each on average per weekend, and much less than that per showing.

I would have advised against producing that movie and airing it. I would have done so in part because it could backfire dramatically if nobody went to see it. No matter what our personal support level for Palin is, it’s the public that really counts. They are the ones who have to remain interested if we want them to vote for her.

Is this proof that Palin isn’t electable? No. I don’t think so. I do see it as troubling. That’s all I would say at this point.

I tried watching Sarah Palin’s Alaska, the television series. (sorry if I got the name wrong) I started out intending to tape all eight episodes. After two, I not only gave up on taping, I quit watching. It turned out to be more Sarah Palin than I wanted to watch.

As for this movie, I’m not sure if I’ll ever watch it.

I’m not trying to convince others of what to think about Palin. I’m only explaining what my take is. I’m not interested enough to learn more about her. I’ve seen enough.

Those of you who do want to know more, I encourage you to seek out more and support her to your heart’s content.

That’s what the process is all about.

I see AMC’s move here to be related to profits. It seems reasonable to me.

As for people located in the areas where the movie was playing, I don’t think anyone should feel guilty of attending or not. Those who truly wanted to see it did go. Those who didn’t, didn’t.

FReeperville has a lot of participants that think Palin is universally wildly popular. In the real world, she really isn’t.

I do think this is a dose of reality that is going to be hard for some folks to accept. If I were a big supporter of hers, I wouldn’t like it one bit.

Thanks, D1!

As I posted elsewhere, I think that we **do** need the POSITIVE message in this movie to get out there, to counter the massive NEGATIVE messages in the media.

But, at minimum, THIS WAY of doing that was an "unforced error" -- which will give our opponents a club they can use to hammer us.
The strategy of a "limited opening" with no advertising created an unnecessary box office fiasco -- which makes Governor Palin look bad, IMHO.
If this **was** a test of our existing "grassroots" organization to get results - we did NOT get a very good score.
We need to do MUCH BETTER on next test.

How do you know they had not already planned to stop the showings there?

Why are you trumpeting this? Why are you so eager to share this with Evening Star (bless his heart)?

Again you are relying on Reuters/yahoo whatever.

Sounds to me like you are unintentionally helping the anti Palins here.

Why would you want to spread a story like this, someone that was thinking of going may say...what`s the point, and it seems to me you have nothing to base your claim...

you say it now APPEARS they have pulled the plug, maybe it was only going to be an initial showing, like they did in other locations IOWA comes to mind

No problem Ron. I know your heart is in the right place, and I admire that.

Getting the positive message out there is important. I’m not sure what the best way of doing that is. It will probably have to come down to the primary/caucus season and appealing to people at events. If Palin declares and presents the best policies and goals for this nation, I’d like to think those voters would reward her with their votes.

I’m not going to trash people for coming up with a plan that fizzled. They were trying to do a good thing, at least I am extending them that courtesy, and it didn’t pan out. As for the limited theater concept, it seems to me that AMC tested the waters to see if the numbers would support a broader release. They didn’t.

I realize there wasn’t much advertising. A production like this isn’t going to have the bucks a major studio would have to promote it. That sucks, but it is reality.

RonDog, as for our “grassroots” doing their job, I am told that millions of people follow Sarah Palin on Facebook (or was it Twitter or both). At any rate, she should have been able to drive some rather impressive numbers on her own if that was the case.

I’m not sure that you should hang your head (or lament the job “we did NOT get a very good score” you were doing) in shame for not doing a very good job. You were attempting to organize a Palin Movie event in the region, and that’s an admirable thing to do as a supporter.

As much as you folks would like to push Palin to success, I still think it comes down to her. She has tools at her disposal that should be very helpful. If she can’t get folks out with all those contacts, I’m not sure you should take part of the blame upon yourself or the group of folks who hold the same level of respect for her.

Take care bud.

Why are you trumpeting this?
LOLOL!
You certainly don't know much about my posting history. ;)
I **discretely** posted my concerns about this on a few old threads about "The Undefeated" -- to a few FReepers whose opinions I value.
If I were TRUMPETING this...
...it would be on a NEW THREAD -- posted in "Breaking News."

Your reference to Reuters/Yahoo is a decent one.  If there weren't figures to back up some of what their story said, I could agree with you.

In this instance, I don't believe the figures lie.  Here they are.  LINK  Check out the information for the movie ranking 55th in box office draw for it's second weekend out.

Since the data at that link is going to die after this upcoming weekend, I'll provide the figures here, as they showed up on the site.

July 22-24, 2011 / Weekend

TW    LW     Title (click to view)            Studio    Weekend Gross    % Change    Theater Count / Change    Average    Total Gross    Budget*    Week #

55      40       The Undefeated (2011)     ArcEnt     $24,664              -62.1%         14 / +4                            $1,762       $101,382           -              2

What the linked info reveals, is that the attendence at "the Undefeated" fell by 62,1%* week 1 to week 2, this last weekend.  Big fall-offs are to be expected at most movies, so this isn't unexpected or out of the ordinary for "the Undefeated".  Only the most popular movies continue to hold strong numbers after the first week.

Undefeated fell from 40th to 55th in box office revenues.  The 2nd weekend gross was $24,664 at 14 theaters.  Broken down, that's $1,762 dollars per screen.  If ticket prices were pegged at $10 each, this would mean that on average 176 people saw the movie per screen over the weekend.  If the movie was aired only five times from Friday through Sunday, that would mean the per screening count would be something like 35 people on average.  If there were ten screenings, the screening average would be about 18 people per screening.

If you take the weekend gross from the total gross, you come up with reduction in box office from roughly $76,718 to about $24,664 week one to week two, with four additional screens.  (can't explain why this isn't represented for being a nearly 68% decline in box office week 1 to week 2, as the numbers seem to indicate*)  Perhaps they were only addressing the box office at the original ten screens.  It would seem reasonable to address the full box office at all screens.  The full box office is what is being addressed by those figures $24,664 vs $101,382.

Were Reuter's/Yahoo being unfair in their reporting?  Perhaps you saw evidence of it.  If so please explain why you see it that way.

Take care.
