Former Gov. Bill Richardson thought about pardoning the infamous New Mexico bandit Billy the Kid.
Gov. Susana Martinez is deputizing the whole world to catch him all over again.
Martinez rolled out the states newest Tourism Department program, dubbed Catch the Kid, on Thursday to draw travelers to New Mexico, promising $10,000 to whoever follows the clues to track down Billy the Kid and bring him to justice.
Some people have considered pardoning Billy the Kid, but as the governor and a career prosecutor for 25 years, Im here to say that we are not letting him off the hook, Martinez told a news conference in Albuquerques Old Town.
Tourism Department officials have left clues in 10 cities across the state and will be giving away weekly prizes for participants to win travel packages, food and other travel-related gifts, said Monique Jacobson, Tourism Department secretary.

I cut ‘em some slack for that. With the fire publicity, tourism is prolly down. Hope the expenditure pays off for you New Mexicans.
The Kid’s a piker compared to the Richardson gang.
Cool idea ping.
Actually, the article did mention that positive advertising to offset the fire stories was part of the reason for the promotion. I drove to Colorado over the Fourth and up I-25 to the west and to the east smoke from the Los Conchos and Pacheco fires obscured the horizon. It was especially bad in the Espanola area with the sky orange brown and visibility poor.
I hear he now goes by the nickname “Laz”
Used to live there, got family there, been down the canyon. Any definitive ruling on the cause and origin of the fire?

I continue to be very impressed with our "Mama Grizzly-cub" governor!
